DSL connectivity loss only one of two PC's on LAN

Hello:

I'm on Verizon DSL .using a LAN with one other PC on the network .

Recently, I've been getting "limited or no connectivity" readings at the
computer icon for the LAN at the system tray, and am unable to go online.
The icon shows a yellow triangle with an exclamation point.

The odd thing is that the other PC on the LAN never loses its
connectivity..

I can regain the connectivity by shutting modem and router for ~1/2 minute
and then plugging them back in. This generally does the trick, but it's
inconvenient as the modem and router are located in a different part of the
house.

The network uses an external modem: Westell [Wirespeed]

I don't know what might be causing these disconnects, and why they happen on
one PC but not the other. But here are a few indications of potential
culprits.

1) DHCP errors

I get a DHCP error almost daily with varying Event ID's., many along the
lines of:

"Your computer has lost the lease to its IP address %2 on the Network Card
with network address %1. "
:

2) Two network adapters at the Device Manager:

a) Intel Pro/1000 MT Network Connection

b) Linksys USB 2.0 Network Adapter ver 2

The Linksys USB 2.0 is listed as unplugged-at a red-X computer icon in
system tray.-- even though it's inserted in the USB port.

I also have two LAN icons under Network Connections:

1) Local Area Connection: Connected, Shared Intel Pro/1000 MT Network
Connection

2) Local Area Connection 2 Network Cable Unplugged, Linksys USB 2.0
Network Adapter ver 2. This icon has a red X through it..

I don't know if that Intel Pro/1000 MT Network Connection network adapter
is supposed to have something plugged in or not. I can't seem to find it.
And I see this type of adapter described as an "internal adapter" though I'm
unclear as to what exactly that means.

The other PC also has two such icons . And the second one has that RED X
through it as well.

3) Power Management is turned on for both those adapters.

At LAN-->Properties--> Configure--->Power Management
gives me the option "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power".
is now checked in for both those adapters -and LANs mentioned earlier.

I don't know if it's advisable to uncheck those boxes; offhand I see no
reason for those adapters to shut down.

I don't know if any of these are related to my frequent loss of
connectivity, but I'm trying to give as much info on this as possible.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance:

-Eli

Thanks Robert:

I went thru the steps at that troubleshooting site with no luck....

Help and Support-->Tools-->My Computer Info-->Hardware and Software. That scan tells me that the driver for the Network Adapter is up to date.

Disabling and reenabling LAN doesnt help the situation. Only unplugging modem and router for half a minute and replugging them reestablishes the LAN connection on my PC.

I did notice on that chicago tec site:
www.chicagotech.net/troubleshooting/noconnectivity.htm

that the installed windows firewall for xp shouldnt be activated for LAN. I'm not sure I understand exactly what is meant there but here's what I have in my own LAN -->Properties

LAN-->Properties-->Advanced--> Windows Firewall Settings Tab--->Windows Firewall is OFF

But, if I go to the Advanced Panel on the Windows Firewall, i see

Windows Firewall---> Advanced.

Over there I see a vertical series of checked in boxes:

LAN
LAN2
MSN
MSN2

The MSN and MSN 2 are from the dialup networking which i scarcely use anymore unless the dsl isnt functioninig.

It surprises me that these are checked in because the built in Windows XP Firewall is diabled on my PC .

I use the Zone Alarm Firewall which is part of the Zone Alarm scurity Suite 6.1.744.001

Should I uncheck those boxes?

Please advise me further.

Thanks in advance:

-Eli
