Just completed a download of Knoppix_V3.4-2004-05-10-EN.iso from the
mirror at

http://sunsite.cnlab-switch.ch/

Using Stardownloader 1.43.

The download went quickly, at 120-146KB/sec, but I kept getting
unexpected Windows98 messages warning that I would run out of disk
space soon. I moved some files off the target drive during the
download, until I had 200MB more than required according to Explorer.
The download continued uninterrupted.

I didn't watch the last 20 minutes or so, and when I came back,
Stardownloader reported "done". Starddownloader reported no problems.

But there was also another insufficient disk space message on the
screen. I checked the drive, and it showed almost 300MB free. I then
checked the iso size, and it was reported as 688MB. I went back to the
site, and started another download, just to see what final size
Stardownloader reported, and it was the same.

I then ran the WinMD5sum, and got:

792f6f90608dac6de572fde251949491

which doesn't match the published MD5SUM (and also looks a bit
strange).

I burned the ISO anyway, and that went uneventfully. Then I tried to
boot from the CD. With the default kernel, I got the black screen of
death, ditto for "knoppix testcd". "With "knoppix26" I got "kernel
corrupted or incomplete". I then tried looked at the CD under Windows,
hoping at least to find the promised floppy-boot "howto". I couldn't
find it in any of the four folders shown, nor in the root directory,
and most of the text and html files I found are so scrambled as to be
unreadable.

So now I'm wondering whether this site has a corrupted iso, or whether
the downloader is corrupting it during download or what?

Has anyone gotten a good download of this release (preferrably from a
speedy site)? Alternatively, can someone post the floppy-boot howto
said to be published in this release?

Hi Achim,

that's a "problem" with Windows ... they warn you after there's
just a special percentage of the disk left ... no matter how many
MBs or even GBs that might be.
I moved some files off the target drive during the
download, until I had 200MB more than required according to Explorer.

Fine...

Looks like you have to delete that one (or maybe you can try
a retransfer ... some Browsers - like Opera - allow that)

Rats! :))

Wouldn't think so .. and just in case .. there are many mirror-sites:
http://www.knoppix.net/get.php
Has anyone gotten a good download of this release (preferrably from a

Just doing it right now ...

Alternatively, can someone post the floppy-boot howto

It's all on that sites ...

The way download managers work:

1) The download manager takes the file and splits the file into chunks.
2) After all chucks have been downloaded, the sum equals the size of the
original file.
3) Now the download manager must have room on the hard drive to
reassemble these downloaded Chunks. This space could be more then twice
the original size of the downloaded file.
4) Even if you do not split the download into chunks, the download
manager will still need to take the file from it's temp location and move
it to the location that you have specified. IE does the same thing from
it's "Temporary Internet Files" temp directory to your specified
location.
5) That said, it can be seen that when you download a file, you should
have at least twice the space available for the downloaded file.
Additional space will be required if the swap/pagefile requires requires
more space and any additional space required by the download manager to
perform it's job.

Mr Lohse, version 1.42 of Star Downloader exhibited a very annoying
and time-consuming bug with corrupt downloads. It has been noted in
this group by several people. I don't know if it's been fixed, but
instead of trying for an eternity to get the file using this program,
you might consider using another DL manager. Good ones seem to be :
Net Transport, Download Express, DL Expert, Fresh Download, WackGet
etc.
If, for some reason you are reluctant to try them, there is yet
another way using wget whick doesn't require installation.

Not usually, in my experience. One of the two chief reasons I use
download managers for large downloads instead of IE is that IE
requires double the size of the download.

Thanks, but the problem is that I don't usually have 1.5 GB of free
space available on a single drive. My largest hard drive is only 4GB.

I also don't understand why a download manager would crap out after
giving one a "make more free space message", instead of waiting for
the instruction to be followed.

Thanks for your suggestions. As mentioned above, I did use
Stardownloader 1.43 for the failed download. I subsequently tried
DLExpert99, and found it difficult to navigate and very slow by
comparison with Stardownloader. I eventually went back to the same
cernlab mirror with Stardownloader 1.43 and downloaded the same file
again. The download proceeded at 146 KB/sec and both the external and
internal MD5Sums matched. So I'm afraid the corrupted earlier download
was somehow due to insufficient free disk space.

What I can't understand is why a downloader would not look at the
amount of space available on the target hard drive at the very start
of the download and advise the user exactly how much free space will
be required to save the file? In my experience, even when the warning
message of "insufficient disk space" is delivered at the last moment,
this insufficiency is never quantified.

Do any of the downloaders you recommend above provide such a feature?

Hello Achim Nolcken Lohse:

Save the location of the file to another drive. Ex. Lets say you have
the free space of say 700 Megs on drive C:\ and 700 Megs on drive D:\ .
The download will be saved in the temp usually on C:\ and you can set the
location to have the file saved on D:\ .

Both of these location can be set in the options in Star Downloader.

Unfortunately, I NEVER have 700MB free on drive C:, or any other drive
except my 4GB SCSI.
Both of these location can be set in the options in Star Downloader.
I understand. I ended up setting both the "partial download" directory
and the target directory to the same drive, since that's the only one
that had enough room. It's also where I have my Temporary Internet
Files directory, for the same reason. Still, it's maddening to lose a
large download and have to do it over because of such lack of
flexibility in the downloader.

I generally have 700MB or so free space spread over two or three
drives, in addition to the 700MB on the target drive, plus a permanent
Windows swap file of 160MB. You'd think that a program that can
download a single file in several portions and reassemble it could
also utilize the space on several drives for partial download storage?
