Knoppix Linux question

Hi all.. I recently downloaded an iso of Knoppix Linux v3.8.2. After
burning it to cd I tried it and the computer will not boot from it. The
machine accesses the drive and then shuts off and restarts again. I do
have the cdrom set as the first boot device. Do I have to make this cd
bootable before I burn the iso? How can I make this work?

One burns it as an "image".

Am assuming you did not merely burn the file xxxx.iso to the CD. An
..ISO file must be sector-burned to the CD by such as ...Nero, e.g.
Burning the usual typical Knoppix .ISO images correctly, should produce
the desired bootable CD resulting in operating Knoppix directly from the
disk, or providing a GUI for installing 3.8.2 onto a new hard drive.

That's what I did. It doesn't work.

Open the CD you created in windows. Have you just got a file with .iso,
or have you got a bunch of stuff there ?.

Obviously you burnt it as an image, which you previously said. If you
burnt it in Nero, what speed did you use to burn? I find iso files burn
better at 4x speed rather than something like 24x for example.

The iso file may be corrupt too, I have had an issue where an Ubuntu iso
was corrupt, but a freshly downloaded one from a different server was fine.

Try re-burning at 4x if you didnt already and if that doesn't work, try
grabbing another iso from a different server.

Have your setup your computer bios to boot from the cd?

Ok I tried burning at a different speed and I tried another iso ver 3.9.
still no go. I suspect something is amiss with the computer. It is an
old Pentium 166 running win98se which I use to test things out. It does
however meet all the criteria for running Linux. Oddly though it will
boot from the win98 cd. Thanks everyone for your help and if anyone can
suggest anything else I will try it.

So what happens if you put your newly burnt CD into another computer?
There is no need to play safe with Knoppix, it won't hurt your main
computer.

That's what I did. It doesn't work.

Learn how to use the software you're using by reading the freaking
instructions that came *WITH* it instead of whining about how
it doesn't work here.

Here's a clue. Instead of using Nero and other crap Windows software like it,
use a software package that's designed to burn .ISO files to a blank cdrom or
dvd.
