KMODE EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED

Please help.

I am using Windows 2000 Professional Revision 0 (1st edition). I have
installed the OS on a Gigabyte GA-K8NS Pro Motherboard using a Serial ATA
250GB Western Digital Hard Drive. I use an All-In-Wonder Radeon 8500DV Video
card that utilizes 4X AGP.

Since I am using the 1st edition of Win2k and it doesn't have any service
packs included yet, only the first 137GBs of my hard drive is detected. I
partition that portion of the hard drive, format it and install the OS. I
install the most updated motherboard drivers immediately after OS
installation is complete. The next step I take is updating the registry for
EnableBigLba so I will be able to access the unseen portion of my hard drive.
I then download service pack 4 and install it and reboot. I install all
remaining drivers and the system is fine. After I have done this I use the
disk manager to partition and format the remaining half of the 250GB hard
drive.

After doing all of these steps (during my first attempt), I setup Windows
Update. It had several patches and hotfixes selected and ready for download.
I let it do its thing and rebooted. As Win2k rebooted, it blue screened and
wouldn't let me get back into windows using any of the F8 options giving me
the error I notate further down.

Since there have been many times that I have had 5 or more Windows updates
to download and install at one time and, at times, one of these requires to
be updated separately I thought maybe Windows was biting off more than it
could chew by trying to install all of these updates at once.

So... I started all over again

Reinstall (after deleting and creating the partition again and formatting)
the OS. All the same steps that I did before but this time, I only
downloaded and installed 6-9 Windows updates at a time with the typical
reboot in between. All was going well until I got to about the last 8 or 9
that I had left. I downloaded and installed these, rebooted and, well... it
happened all over again.

I am receiving the following error:

Stop: 0x0000001E (0xC0000005, 0xEB483DEB, 0X00000000, 0X6BD31B14) KMODE
EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED

I have spent about an extra week reinstalling everything the second time to
try and avoid any problems. What I don't understand is why my system is
running fine each time until I install one of these particular Window's
updates/fixes. Which one it is, I have no idea since there's at least 40 or
more of them and I can't spend time reinstalling Win2k for a third time and
downloading and installing each of these fixes/updates one at a time till I
find the one that doesn't like me :..(

As I stated, I have tried all F8 options and my emergency repair disc but I
still get the same blue screen results. It seems like one of these
updates/fixes isn't going to budge and I am completely stuck. Can someone
please help me? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

This Stop Error is typically attributed to a corrupt or
damaged drivers. Just what were the updates that had been
installed? It is one thing for critical updates as they
affect primarily Microsoft's programs, e.g., Windows 2000,
IE, etc., and another when the updates apply to vendor-
specific items, such as peripheral drivers. And this is the
rationale for not permitting automatic updates except for
critical ones. Is there any more information, such as the
name of the system file that is involved? That is, what was
the last update that was installed before this error?

I ran into the same exact problem on my 2000 Server a few days ago after I
upgraded from NT4 and ran the Micrsoft Security Rollback update for sp4 which
is (unfortunately) one of the critical updates for 2000 listed on MS product
update site.

The following article will help you identify the exact cause of this error:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;275678

You can use the 2000 Recovery console to uninstall the update from the
system which will enable you to boot the OS into Safe Mode. Once in Safe
Mode, you will have to manually look for Security Rollback Update folder
(last amongst the updates on the root) and uninstall it from your system.

I strongly advise to monitor MS Security Bulletins before attempting to
install this update especially on Servers with legacy/older SCSI interfaces
as was the case with me.

Good luck!

Khurram
