Kind of odd problem

My son's computer has two hard drives ... when he had problems booting
we switched jumpers and planned to reinstall an XP Home Edition on the
new C: ... but the upgrade won't install since it doesn't see the OS on
D: ... we can't xcopy old c: files to new C: but we can copy one file at
a time ... so the question is what files do we need to move so that the
upgrade will work?

TIA

You appear to be trying to INSTALL the OS using an UPGRADE. The only way
that will work is to install the OS on D first then do the upgrade.

This sounds like the hard way to proceed. If your PC wouldn't boot because
of a damaged file you might just end up copying that damaged file to D:

What happened when you tried a repair the installation on the original
drive?

When you do an upgrade, right after you get the message that Windows
can't find an operating system to upgrade, you are given the option of
putting in a cd with an older operating system as qualifying media. If
you have a Windows 98/ME cd, put it in then. If you don't have one,
borrow one from a friend.
