Two XP installs on same partition

My son's computer with two drives, ea. with two partitions, suddenly
wouldn't boot with an error message about "system disk failure". Since the C
drive was only 6 mo. old I unfortunately thought that he had somehow
corrupted the OS. So, I went into the repair option with the install CD.
After three unsuccessful attempts (each time trying to install it into a new
directory "WINXP") I noticed on the POST that the D drive wasn't being
recognized. I disconnected it and reconnected the drive and, viola, it
booted into the completion of an install. Now I have on the C drive the
original install in C:\Windows and the new install in C:\WINXP which it is
apparently booting from. How can I get it back to booting off of the
C:\windows directory so all of his desktop icons and all settings were as
before? If I can do that how or should I delete the dir. WINXP? Thank you.
