keyboard time lag

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop that I bought years ago, when XP was
new.
Now when I type I have to wait about half a second between letters
because of a time lag in the computer. I can't type any faster. The
computer doesn't store quickly typed text in memory and then put it up
on the screen. It drops any character typed too soon after the one
that came before, so I just have to... waaiiittt... before EVERY
character I type. This behavior only started today, and it's just
murder to try and type. Help!
Going to reboot now...

Don't know what it was, but rebooting fixed it.
