Keyboard Problem

I have a HP Pavilion laptop and when I press certain keys I get a
different response e.g. pressing '@' gives '"' and vice versa. In
particular I cannot get the '|' (pipe) symbol, which is causing me
grief using Linux.

I have the laptop set to English (United Kingdom), although I have
tried English (United States) and English (Australia) (I bought the
laptop in Australia) . Can anyone suggest a solution
