Keyboard Problem - MS Office Keyboard

N

Nick Mason

I've recently bought a new PC running Vista for home use, I'm still using
my current keyboard, an MS Office Keyboard like this;

http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-E17-00002-Office-Keyboard/dp/B00005NVBO

When I tried to install the MS Intellitype Pro drivers Vista tells me there
are known compatibility issues and points me to the MS site for a possible
solution. On the MS site my keyboard isn't listed, you choose your product
type, product, language etc. Maybe MS think it's too old despite the fact
you can still buy them!

In a bid to resolve the problem I picked the Media keyboard from the list
and downloaded the latest Intellitype Pro driver, version 6.2 I think.

This driver installs OK and to my relief almost fixes the problem. Most of
the keys work as documented except the scroll wheel on the left and the Cut,
Copy, Paste keys work fine in an application but copy and paste between
applications doesn't always work. Of course I tend to use the scroll wheel a
*lot* in preference to the mouse scroll wheel.

Has anyone got this type of keyboard working properly?

How did you do it?

What are the issues with the original driver software?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Keyboards don't have drivers. You are trying to install the software that is
incompatible. Consider buying a new keyboard--the natural ergonomic KB 4000
is not expensive--less than $40, runs with the latest Intellitype software
version 6.1 and will solve your problem. It looks a lot like your keyboard.
I've been using it for a year now and it runs great with Vista.

Keyboards do have drivers, and the MS 4000 keyboard is not the best
replacement unless the OP is a skilled typist..

I'm skilled typist, I've been in database development and application
support for 32 years. My problem is that I've been typing for so long that I
forget how to form words when I have to pick up a pen!

I have one of these on my work PC. It took me a while to get used to. ;O)

http://www.daskeyboard.com/

I did try an ergonomic keyboard when they first came out but never really
got on with them. I think the problem was that I sat in front of so many
different servers, terminals, PCs and Unix boxes that swapping between a
normal and ergonomic keyboard was a pain.

I'll probably bite the bullet a get a new keyboard at some point but it irks
me that there's nothing wrong with the one I have and I like the scroll
wheel on the left. I'll give it a while and and see if I can live with it as
it is.

So it goes..

Nick,

I have an Office Keyboard and was able to get the wheel and buttons working
in Vista by doing the following:

Download Intellitype 5.0 from here
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...52-5d92-4772-a2fd-5ab35c750685&DisplayLang=en

Force the installation of IntelliType Pro 5.0 (old version).
- Unzip ITP5_0Eng.exe (direct execution not possible on Vista.)
- In property of \Microsoft Intellitype Pro 5.0\IType\Setup.exe, set
Compatibility mode = Win2000
- Launch this Setup (not the \Microsoft Intellitype Pro 5.0\Setup.exe !)
- In C:\Program Files\Microsoft IntelliType Pro, set Compatibility mode =
WinXP (or Win2000) for ALL the exe.

It works, only pb is there is an error message when trying to access to the
configuration of the keyboard in Control Panel (RunDll32...). But at least
all the keys are working (Cut, Past, Copy, Web... and wheel).

Thanks to BarCode for this tip.

Good Luck,

Mike

Outstanding!

It works fine apart from the DLL failure. As I only want the keys to do what
they should by default this isn't a problem. I have also noticed that when
using the volume buttons the green volume bar doesn't move but the volume
does so it's a minor issue.

Thank you very much for this.

Glad to hear it helped. For me as long as the scroll wheel and buttons on
the left side work, I'm happy. I think I also noticed the 'log off' button
doesn't work, but that's no big deal.

Just tried the log off button and you're right, it doesn't work but then
again I don't use it so it doesn't matter.

Mary I see you have a Natural ergonomic KB 4000. I just purchased one and
load the software and did not run into any problems with that but only
certain keys work on the keyboard. They seem to work fine when I am in a
word document but out of it such as to type in a new web address, back space,
delete or even type in a password for another program the keyboard will not
respond. Do you have any suggestions?

Mike, which OS and driver versions are you using? Your keyboard scroll wheel
works?
I have the same Desktop Elite keyboard/mouse set...but my scroll wheel on
the keyboard is not working. I am on Vista Home Premium (32-bit), and have
the Intellitype and Intellipoint software version 6.1 installed. I will try
mhornet's suggestion of installing the older version, since the scroll wheel
*did* work in the past (before upgrading to Vista).

Sorry for double-posting...I tried the version 5.0 but it did not work. I
uninstalled it and removed the folder, then reinstalled 6.1. Now my
scrollwheel works properly. hmm, go figure. :blush:/
