Keyboard Language Settings

G

Guest

Greetings,

I have a user whose physical keybaord is Swedish, but when he types it has a
French layout and hence types French characters!?! This only happens at logon
screen, because after logon the language settings change back to Swedish
which is what they should be. French is not even added in Regionale Options
so this is all very weird indeed. The only other language setting is US
English.

Secondly, when he changed his desktop layout and relogs back into Windows
his settings are not saved, ie he makes his taskbar a certain width but the
change doesn't stick. Are there registry settings that need tweaking perhaps?

Please can anyone help?

Tnx,
Taz

HKEY_USERS\.Default stores the profile used when no users are logged on to
the computer (such as when the CTRL+ALT+DELETE logon prompt is
displayed).

Open the Registry Editor...
Start | Run | Type: regedit | Click OK |
Navigate to >>>
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Keyboard Layout\Preload

Mine only has one Value Name, which is 1 and the Value data is 0409 which is
US English.

French is 040c

Swedish is 041D

Also look at
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Keyboard Layout\Substitutes
to see if 040c is listed.

NoSaveSettings Description
[[Prevents users from saving certain changes to the desktop. Users can

or the size and position of the taskbar, are not saved when users log off.
Shortcuts placed on the desktop are always saved.]]

Also check this key for NoSaveSettings

If NoSaveSettings does not exist, it is the same as if it were set 0, the
policy is disabled or not configured. Changes to the desktop are saved.

If NoSaveSettings is set 1, the policy is enabled. Some changes to the
desktop are not saved.

Or if XP Pro, use Group Policy...

Hi Wesley,

Thank you very much for your prompt reply.

Yes, the issue with the French kb was solved with your tip, but the second
issue where the user desktop tasbar width change setting would'nt stick is
still unresolved despite trying both registry and GP edits mentioned. But
this is not really important because the user can live with it.

However if you have another tip for this it would be handy as it's nice to
know a solution if possible.

Regards,
Taz

Hi Wesley,

Thankyou for your prompt reply.

Yes, your tip for the French kb issue was exactly what I needed...however
the second issue where some desktop changes (taskbar width) doesn't stick is
still unresolved. However this is no big deal because in this case the user
can live with it.

Glad to hear it, Taz.

Lock the Taskbar?

Right click the taskbar and click Lock the Taskbar.

When you lock the taskbar into position, it cannot be moved or resized
