Really can't change language?

Hi there
Sorry to be ignorant and annoyed but can I really not change the default
language for dialogue boxes/start menu etc? My dear old dad (+65) bought a pc
for his place in france and he's no geek so didn't think to specify which
language he wanted XP to be in and so it's in french. His french is pretty
good but the language is pretty technical so it's a bit of a struggle
(english is his first language, techy his last). Geek daughter offered to
help but do I really have to say 'spend x pounds to buy xp again then
re-install it and all programmes, files etc'? Seems a little rubbish to me...

No, you cannot. You'd need to be running a French-language version of
Windows.

Similarly, you can't have IE display an English-language webpage in French.

You could install Ubuntu. It's free and you can change languages at
will. Order the 6.06 CD (Ubuntu pays the postage), do not use 6.10.

Or, since changing your Operating System to Linux, which is the worst
idea in the world for a guy whose last language is techy, you could
stick to talking about ways to help this person in regards to his
WINDOWS XP questions in the WINDOWS XP forum.

That's like me saying: "Hey, I have a broken leg, and now I'm having a
small problem with my brand new Ferrari", and you saying "Well, just
get rid of it, and here, take this bike for free. I'm sure you can
ride it fine with a broken leg." It's completely irrelevant, and a
difficult to use. (At least in my opinion)

XP cannot change languages, you moron, so there's no "help" to give.

No, it's suggesting a superior OS that DOES let you change languages.
Ubuntu is just as user friendly as XP, maybe more.

User friendly, maybe, powerful, no where near, and realted to the
Windows XP group, not at all.

Title of thread: "Really can't change languages?" I was providing help
for languages. You provided nothing but hot air and a strident,
supercilious Net Cop attitude.

The only way to get XP in English is install an English language version.
This can be done as a clean install removing the French language version or
as a dual boot so both are there.

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

In the dual boot situation create a separate partition for the English
version. Boot from the English version installation CD, choose to install
to that new partition. The XP installation will see the French installation
and set up the dual boot using the XP boot loader. At boot up a menu is
presented as to which OS to boot. One of them can be set as the default and
you can specify how many seconds to wait before booting into the default
installation.

Thank you all for your responses. I'm not interested in installing linux and
it's too late to return the machine (my dad has been suffering in silence for
a while) and buying XP would cost more than the computer. Oh well, it'll be
good for his french ;)
I am a little disappointed that MS can't come up with a solution for their
clients but hey-ho.
