keyboard double letters problem

I do not know if this is fixable or not but it sure is annoying.
I am using a Toshiba Laptop with XP SP3. I have the setting for the keyboard
set at the shortest "repeat delay" and the fastest "repeat rate". Yet, when
I double click while writing 50% of the time only one letter appears. Is
there any other hidden setting in XP I can use to make my double letters
appear when I type rapidly?

I suppose you mean "double-hit" when you say "double-click". Double-clicks
usually refer to the mouse.

Pressing a keyboard key twice in rapid succession is independent of your
repeat delay and repeat rate. Even with the longest delay and the slowest
rate, you must be able to type at top speed. If you can't then you have a
defective keyboard or a serious CPU loading problem. I suggest you try one
or all of these methods:
- Use an external USB keyboard.
- See if the problem persists in Safe Mode.
- Boot the machine with a DOS boot CD (www.bootdisk.com) and see if the
problem persists.
The results will tell you if you have a faulty keyboard or a problem with
Windows.

You are correct, I did mean double hit.

Thank you for the suggestions. Very helpful.

Hi Pegasus

I do not have a USB keyboard to try but

a) in safe mode with just MS Word open, the double clicking problem does not
seem to happen (as it typically does)
b) even in regular (not safe) bootup, the double clicking does not sem to be
a problem if I only have Word open.

Because I multi-task a lot and typically have several programs open (Firefox
with 30 tabs, sometimes a graphic program, often both Word and something
else open) could it be that I am running out of memory? Even though I
actually have 4GB ram (I know that XP can only see 3 GB)? Or am I on the
wrong track.

I keep the system regularly defragmented, have no viruses (checked with more
than one AV though I only run Avast) and no malware (check regularly).

(Just noticed that even with this minimal system seem in the message above
came out "sem" and that is with non-safe mode and only Outlook Express
open). Could it be to many programs running in the background, perhaps
seeking updates? I do have Zone Alarm constantly running and Avast free for
AV. I've stopped whatever services I thought I safely could, so all that has
already been done and I do not wish to cripple the system by stopping
something I should not.

Could it be that I am just running too many programs simultaneously or too
many programs are updating in the background? The double hitting problems
seems less frequent when there are less programs running. My CPU is
certainly not runing near capacity. (notice the "runing").

Thanks.

In order to eliminate the hardware suspicion once and for all, I would
borrow a USB keyboard (or a PS/2 keyboard if your laptop has a PS/2 socket).
