Keyboard and mouse failure

Hi,

I've been experiencing a problem with my computer ever since my mate
installed some driver updates. To be specific, I think he updated my
soundcard, the BIOS, videocard and something called 4in1 or something.
The problem I experience, is that suddenly the keyboard and mouse stops
working. It's like they decide what to do. For example, I left-click a file,
and the Attributes of that file open. When I right-click, I get the usual
menu. And I can't type at all. It's like if I press a key, it opens the File
menu in for example Notepad.

It's very strange, and I can't figure this out. It's very annoying because I
have to reboot all the time.

Can anybody help me?

Hi

Would this be a VIA 4 in 1 to upgrade your BIOS?

Hello,

Yes I believe so. If I'm not mistaken, my mate installed the 'Retro chipset
VIA 4in1 drivers', version 4.43, released 25th. October 2001.
That might seem old, but apparently it was the only driver that was
supported by my platform.

Hi

That's an old 'update'!! That could be your problem. Contact your mobo's
web site and ask for some help there.

It isn't really old. VIA chipset changed a little around that time and they
now have areana drivers that replaced the 4in1 drivers. however they don't
advise you to install the arena versions if you have a certain chipset. his
problem kind of sounds like an irq conflict more then a chipset driver
problem to me. If another device is using the same irq, it could cause a lag
in responce untill that device stops using it. Sharing IRQs is normal and in
most casetrouble free. If there is an issue, of couse that would depend on
the devices in volved to weather or not it becomes a problem Video cards,
modems, sound cards and mouse devices seem to have the most issues that i
have noticed. Somethign that might make even more troubling to find is that
there are actually only 15 IRQs on the mainboard and windows XP seems to be
able to find somethign like 22 or so IRQs

How do you suggest I fix this problem then? Mind you, I'm not very computer
literate, so if anything else goes wrong, I'm in serious trouble :)

i would look in the system information utility and check the irqs and see if
they are being shared. I'm not sure if you can change them like you were
able to in win98 but it is worht a try. Another thing to try is the driver
roll back in the device managers device tab. If you rerun the via setup
watch carfully there should also be an uninstal feature allowing you to
uninstall parts of the upgrade. Via's installer is quite competent though.
If you uninstall the drivers, Xp should kick in with it's own. I would be
care full uninstalling the ide drivers though. Make sure you have a backup
of your important information if you decide to select that durring the via
4n1 uninstall routine.
