I have a dell d610 laptop with replaced hard disk but lost restore CD.

Well, the product key of the Win XP Professional is on the sticker on the
laptop. But when I try to install from a XP professional CD it constantly
says that the product key is invalid. Whick version of windows XP do I have a
license for, and what can I install???!!!! Is it possible to tell from this
product key?

How nice of you to give out your personal key code.. now somebody else can
use it.. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..

You have to use the same version of CD.. your original installation was of
the OEM type.. your key would not work with a full retail version.. the CD
would have to be an OEM version..

Under NO circumstances should you post Product ID keys to public
newsgroups! You risk having your key stolen and invalidated! The
reason it isn't working is because the key you are trying to use is an
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) key. OEM keys do not work with
retail cd's. You will have to contact Dell to remedy the situation, or
borrow a Dell cd from someone.

I may be wrong and am certain that any minute you will get an MVP with a
brain the size of a planet give you better info but,
you have an oem version of xp pro supplied by Dell - your best option (IMHO)
is to contact dell for a replacement recovery disk, will cost just a few
dollars.

publishing your key could cause you problems with wga if others use it (I
think??)

Well, is it possible to remove my key from this discussion then?

Thanks anyway guys
(for all including my key in your replies, making it even harder to delete,
and more attractive in search engines...)

I guess I'll have to get an OEM cd from Dell then...

Your key is now floating around in cyberspace, propagating to more than just
the MS newsgroups for eternity.

Too late now, it's already in the Google archives

Yes. It's not just google, though. Newsgroup postings here (and elsewhere)
are very quickly propagated to all the many servers that carry the
particular newsgroup. Even if you get it off the server you use, it will be
on dozens or hundreds of other servers all over the world where you have no
ability to remove it.

When you replied to this post, couldn't you at least have had the courtesy
to delete the OP's product key?

Like every other mistake one feels silly/stupid when its pointed out,
thanks!
my apologies to the OP, and to you for forcing you to remind me.
however, although I agree would have been prudent to remove it, I don't
think one should assume a lack of courtesy, we are trying to be constructive
and helpful but we are all human and do make mistakes.

As if it makes much difference.. as soon as the OP hit <enter>, the damage
was done.. :)

Larry didn't repost it. Why are you complaining to him?

Hi Ken,

Unfortunately I did post it in quoted text (two levels deep) in one reply.
Tom was right to call me on it.

That was my fault too, as it was in a reply to my post.
thanks for the comment though.

as Mike pointed out earlier, the damage was already done by the OP but, if
it is not pointed out to us all we will make the same mistake again.

regards,
Martin
