keeping inhouse email in house

People in the office like to use email to transfer things to one
another and I would like to find a way for such emails to go directly
instead of out to the internet and back. Other than setting up an
Exchange server any ideas?

Common network share, maybe?

If you're using some external service to host your email, its just that
and you're stuck with that process until you set up an internal email
system.
