is there a way i can somehow keep all the necessary files (i've spent many
many hours downloading over the past year or more!) so's that when i do a HD
format, and reinstall everything as a general cleanup, i won't have to go
thru the whole process of updating windows to get it back to it's current
up-to-date state?!?

Hi

For the one you already have installed, no.

If you want to download updates from a computer for later installs
on same or another computer, you can use Windows Update Catalog:

HOW TO: Download Windows Updates and Drivers from the Windows Update Catalog

If you saved the installs separately then you can burn them to CD for later
use. Be sure to apply this one before connecting to any network.
