Keep getting a Microsoft Office Outlook dialog at Outlook startup.

Hi everyone,

This is a recent problem, recent as in only a day or two. I never had
it before. Now whenever I start Microsoft Outlook 2003, I'll get this
dialog box that says:

Microsoft Office Outlook
The web page could not be found. This error could have been caused by a
bad or misspelled URL; following an invalid link; or your network
connection and/or transient conditions on the Internet. To check the
URL, choose the home page tab on the Properties dialog. Can't find this
file. Make sure the path and file name are correct.

The only thing I did recently to Outlook was to shift my Outlook data
files by following the instructions in this page:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011124801033.aspx

When I right-click on my Personal Folders in Outlook, click on
Properties, and go to the Home Page tab, the Address: shown there is
res://D:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\OFFICE11\1033\outlwvw.dll/outlook.htm. I went to the folder, and
though outlwvw.dll is there, there isn't an outlook.htm file.

I've tried everything from creating outlook.htm, to unchecking the
"Show home page by default for this folder", to changing the path in
the Address: line, to deleting everything in the address line and
unchecking the "Show home page by default for this folder" but no
matter what I do, I will always get that dialog box on starting
Outlook. It's getting to be very annoying.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Is there a way to fix it?

Thanks.

The outlook.htm file is part of the outlww.dll file. With Outlook closed,
try deleting or renaming that dll file, then open another Office program like
Word, go to the Help menu, and click Detect and Repair. That should put a
good copy of the outlww.dll file back in place and hopetull that will solve
your problem.

Hi Jocelyn,

Thanks for the tip, I tried that but it didn't work. I finally figured
out why. I had just recently applied this tweak that I found at
TweakXP.com: http://www.tweakxp.com/article37036.aspx, that uses the
/prefetch:1 switch to speed up program start up time. Once I removed
the " /prefetch:1" part from the Target: line, everything was alright
again. Don't know why it was only the Outlook link that had an adverse
reaction to the tweak. All the other Office links still work fine with
it.

Thanks anyway!

I'm glad you found a solution, and thanks also for posting it so that others
might benefit from it.
