I have the shield by my clock which says "updates are ready for your
computer". Clicked on it and eventually it said it was for SP3. I canceled
out all the panels and now I still have the shield saying I have updates.
I'd rather not have SP3 (had d/ld a few months ago and was lucky in that it
found errors and didn't take), so how can I get rid of this shield?

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3a. Go to Windows Update website | Select CUSTOM and allow the scan to
complete | Uncheck/deselect WinXP SP3 and hide it ("Don't show me this
update again").

3b. For safety's sake, change your Automatic Updates setting to the Notify
Only ("Notify me but...") option; cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

4. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)

NB: Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3) and only until 14 Apr-09:
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=1173 | select "Windows
XP" then select "Windows XP Service Pack 3"

NB: You'll have to have SP3 install by April 2010 in order to receive any
further security updates via Windows Update.
