KB929399 Prevented my CDRW from Burning CDs

I apologize if this is the wrong forum for this post. I've just spent the
entire weekend troubleshooting problems burning CDs. All my CD burning
software (iTunes, Roxio, Real Player, and Windows Media Player) stopped
working.

In my case, the CD burning would go through the whole burning process, but
in the end the CD was B-L-A-N-K, blank, and there were no error messages. I
took the advice of multiple forums and tried uninstalling and reinstalling
software and drivers, but nothing worked.

Then, I discovered a post on Google from a guy having the same problem on
three of his machines after a series of Windows updates. He discovered that
KB929399 was the problem. Well, after I uninstalled KB929399, my burner is
working just fine. I feel like I lost the whole weekend trying to resolve
this issue, so in the interest of saving others the same grief I went
through, I thought I'd pass this tidbit along. Hope it helps someone.

I still don't understand why MS would push out a software development kit
patch as a critical update anyway...

Not really. Note that version 2 of that update had been already released
in March, 2007. See also
