The Description of the error includes the following: The description for
Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( .NET Runtime ) cannot be found. .... The following
information is part of the event: unable to open shim database version
registry key-v2.0.50727.00000
This particular article mentions the error in connection with Visual Studio
2005. Prior to that, the error had been reported in connection with Office
2003. The computer on which I am experiencing it is Win XP SP2, completely
current with updates. It has neither of those applications installed, and
they never were. Rather, it's a recent Win XP clean install and has the
Office 2007 trial. Office was installed in an account that has Administrator
privileges, but was never even opened there. Rather, Office 2007 (Outlook,
Word & Excel) is being used in an account with User privileges, and I suspect
that's giving rise to the error messages - lots of them!
So the source of my issue doesn't seem to be the same as the one reported in
KB918642, and I'm afraid to try its patch without encouragement from someone
who knows. I've done a lot of searching & haven't found any recent occurance
of the issue with a configuration like mine. The reason I brought it up in
this newsgroup is that there were previous long threads about it here in Feb
& March, 2007. Does anyone have any knowledge of this issue or advice?
