I have having the same proble and I do the same fix. I am running w2k sp3
with the novell client 4.83 or 4.91 sp2. I have about 120 machines and I get
the same issue with every single one of them.

We have had the same problem on two Win2000 machines with SP4. Both were HP
Brio's. After reading this post as well as previous ones, I've uninstalled
kb840987 on the two problem machines and asked the users to let me know if
they continue to have the same problems.

Here's an update. After uninstalling that hotfix both users were able to get
through the day without a reboot, however the next day they began again. An
analysis of the mini dump showed the same error and at that point I was
stumped, until I had to slap myself for being so shortsighted... we use SUS
and after looking at the installed updates I found that kb840987 had been
re-installed!!!! duh.

Anyway, to make a long post short, I uninstalled the two stations again and
also unapproved that hotfix for all Windows 2000 stations. I'll post an
update next week to let you know what happened.

Microsoft just released a patch:

http://tinyurl.com/6bphv

But as you'll see on the above page it is not available for downloa
directly. A lot of people are facing this problem, so let us forc
Microsoft to let people download it directly. If you manage to get th
patch from them, could you please send it to me as well.

Thanks,

There is a good reason why hotfixes like this are not generally
available. Microsoft support needs to be able to track who has been
issued these patches in case any problems are found with them, or if
subsequent patches and hotfixes cause problems with it.

Why not simply follow the instructions in the referenced article? You
won't be charged for the call. I fail to see what the issue is. Also,
good luck "forcing" them to change their policy on this. Rather than
whining about this, just call and get the patch.
