I downloaded all the latest updates for ie6 and windows
media player a couple weeks ago. Since then, ie has
crashed more often than ever. If I click on a link to a
pdf file, adobe acrobat starts, then ie performs an error
and shuts down. I think one of the security patches is
keeping my e-mail from working too. Its an IMAP (whatever
that means) system that requires cookies to be enabled. I
tried lowering the ie security settings, but it still
won't work. Does anyone have any suggestions?

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.
