just shuts down

My computer shuts down frequently. Evertime I run the anti virus it will shut
down. It just acts as if the electricity has been cut off.

Click Start, Run and type eventvwr.msc
Select Application entry in the left pane
In the right-pane, look for the Error entry denoted by a Red X

Sort by date and track-down the entry based on what time the error exactly
occurred. Locate and double-click the entry and you'll see more information
in the resulting dialog. Click the copy button at the top and copy the whole
event and paste it to a Notepad document and save it.

Repeat the same for the "System" log. Post the information here.

Using the control panel administrator I get the following errror messages.
The first one seems to be generated when I restart, not when the computer
shut down:

The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal
processing. HRESULT was C0000005 from line 44 of
d:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp. Please contact
Microsoft Product Support Services to report this error.

......................
The second one may have happened while I sleapt and may be associated with
the shutdown process:

User Logoff:
User Name: Guest
Domain: DESKTOP
Logon ID: (0x0,0x30D3B9)
Logon Type: 3

It is part of the Security event properties and occured at 4:00:14 AM while
I slept: Category: Logon/Logoff, Type: Success A Event ID: 538, User:
Desktop\Guest, Computer Desktop

The last still active System Event said:

The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort0, did not respond within the timeout period.

It was recorded 2005-08-01, Source: ata[o, Time: 11:22:48 PM Category: None
Type: Error Event ID: 9 User: N/A Computer: DESKTOP.

I believe that at that time I was still working on the computer, but I am no
longer sure. When I returned in the morning the monitor was dark and the only
way to restart was by hardware rebooting.
