Just out of curiosity who here will upgrade to Vista as soon as it comes out?

I am telling everyone I know who is thinking of getting a New Computer to get
it before the New Year.

Get the most powerful computer you can with Windows XP.
Wait out the the Gold/Gamma release of Vista for at least 6 months to a Year
before upgrading so the bugs can get worked out.

I myself will be waiting till the Delta release (SP1).

Hi Robin....

I have tested at least 5 different Vista versions and I am
not going to upgrade.

If I buys a new PC..... Vista is maybe possible.

Upgrade prices is ridiculous high and only gives you a lot
of "eyecandy" compared
to XP. Something went wrong with Vista.... UAC is terrible,
it´s terrible to work
"under the hood" with Vista.

I may choose to upgrade my laptop. It's a toss-up--it doesn't have the
video smarts to do Aero, so thats too bad, but the networking stuff is worth
it.

I expect to upgrade very few, if any, machines purchased before today, in
business offices I consult with. OTOH, if machines I buy with a Vista spec
in mind have an upgrade offer, I will upgrade them--and I will buy Vista on
new machines.

Think I will sit this one out. In any event my laptops don`t have the spec
to run it properly and I have no intention of replacing them or buying a
desktop until it becomes absolutely necessary. For me that won`t be for a
couple of years by which time, hopefully, most of the bugs will have been
ironed out. Who knows, we may have even seen a SP ;)

My situation's just like Bill's, with a laptop that won't do Aero, but
otherwise it works great and I've been using it seriously since the Beta 2
release. Since the RC is good until June (30th?), I'll probably just run this
out since it's always possible an old (3 1/2 yr) out of warranty laptop will
fail by then.

The desktop needs to be replaced, since a PII 400 w/ W2K is becoming a pain.
This one's more related to when I decide to replace the hardware, since I
assume I'll want Vista for the Multi-media features on a new flat panel TV as
monitor.

Few already have the hardware, so in general I expect to be telling people
to either wait, or be sure they get a voucher for a free/low cost upgrade to
Vista, otherwise they're simply wasting money, since once it's out XP is a
dying OS. Keeping XP on old hardware is fine, but installing it on new at
this point is foolish.

Hi Robin,

I think I will will wait a wee bit before making any change in the OP SYS. A
"wee bit" is not specific but I can say that making a change quickly (ASAP)
is not a wise choice. I would rather hold off and track what happens.

Ballmers answer.... ;)

Ballmer: Vista's No. 1 competitor is Windows XP

"The No. 1 competitor in a sense right out of the chute is
Windows XP Service Pack 2. There are a lot of happy users.
Getting those people to upgrade their software or buy a new
PC -- the fact that people are generally happy is a
certainly a barrier to as rapid adoption as we might like to
see."

If you wait 6 months you will likely loose any possible rebate available.
They are for a finite amount of time, after you get your new computer,

Don't go doing any of your customers a disservice now.

Richard,

You don't hear this often but, money is a non-issue.

I don't have customers (hence the "Geek w/o Portfolio") I have friends that
I help out. I brought my computer after the release of the 2nd Delta (SP2)
last year. I expect it to last me 4 years so I have about 2 1/2 years to go
before I will buy a new machine. By than I expect Vista Delta1 (or even
Delta2) to be out and I will buy a new machine that is Bigger, Better,
Faster, etc and has the fixed version of Vista already installed.

I already know that my job will be using XPSP2 for at least the next 1 1/2
to 2 years so I'm in no rush.
By that point I will become a Vista Geek and will be able to give my friends
good Vista advise.

I got 7 years out of Windows 98 (not even SE mind you), before going to XP,
and when I went my friends went to. There's nothing like free lifetime
support! (Well, okay, I'm not free, they have to feed me).

I totally agree with you Tim.
Based on the fact that it is a brand new OS (Windows Defender is a good
example of all the things that needed to be fixed (and still do even though
it is in final) I am telling my clients the same thing to wait until the
"kinks" are out of it.
I think Microsoft pushed this OS too fast. So many of my customers are just
upgrading from Win98 to XP and how you want them to go buy a totally
different operating system that looks and feels so much different. XP took
a long time to come out. So many companies still have not updated their
software or drivers to meet Vista's demands. On XP you could run old
programs (as it was announced when it came out). On Vista a heck of alot of
old programs will not run. I did the MS Vista analysis program and found 7
programs including Nero 7 will not run on Vista. My ethernet card will not
run on Vista. I have to upgrade my graphic card which I just bought 1yr
ago, will not run on vista. For me to upgrade I would have to invest in
about $200 just to get my hardware up to par besides some of my software.

My new computer which is only 6mths old needs a new audio card because the
driver will not run on Vista. It is a HD Audio driver and since my system
is configured for high-definition audio it doesn't work on vista- go figure.

I cannot see businesses running out and upgrading all their OS"S
immediiately because it would cost a business a fortune to upgrade, besides
I would not recommend a business to do this until all the "kinks" are out of
Vista.

XP was suppose to be the "end all" Operating System, which as we all know it
turned out not to be. How do we know Vista will be that too.

Most beta testers of Vista test it on virgin computers not running all kinds
of programs like a normal user so for the most part how are you going to
know what is really compatable with Vista?

I would rather wait and see.

Hi Robin

Vista works..... but maybe it´s worth maximum $100 for an
upgrade... not a penny more.

Vista is beautiful as the girl sitting on Vistas homepage..

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/

With UAC turned off, a new 3rd party Windows Explorer and a
classic start menu, control panel as menu, it´s OK.

I'm wondering if someone purchases a new machine from Dell once Vista
officially releases, will they have the choice of still going with XP or
will they be _forced_ to buy a machine with Vista?

I asked Dell that question and for the home user they will only be able to
get Vista- not xp unless they go to their "factory outlet" or refurbished
dept then they can still get XP.
For the business side from what the sales person told me at Dell they will
not be offering the buisness side for at least another 6mths and will offer
XP with vista premium computer ready so businesses can upgrade.

I shall certainly wait until Vista is out before I buy a new laptop from
DELL (perhaps January 2007). The idea is that they should install it
for me before shipping it. I have no need for another XP system as I
can always build my own and install the XP license not used! I use VLK
versions so this is not a problem.

As far as new VLK licenses for VISTA is concerned for my organization,
this has to wait for another 6 months or so pending approval of budget
for this!

Hi Engel,

Actually, my point was whether people could "opt out" of getting a machine
with Vista and request one with XP until Vista's Service Pack 19 or so. :>

From what you posted, it sounds as if users can get XP from Dell until March
15, 2007, and then they can decide if they REALLY want to update the O/S to
Vista.

I wonder if I should buy a whole lot of XP CD's now and offer them to the
highest bidder on EBay, once users no longer have a choice.
