Just installed AVG

I have a desktop computer running XP Home SP2. I've been on the
Internet since 1996 and have used McAfee, Norton and Computer Associates
anti-virus software. Today, I installed the free version of AVG anti-virus.
Installation went fine, and the software appears to be functioning okay.

However, I was somewhat taken aback while reading about the software.
Apparently updates are released once a month. With the other anti-virus
programs I used, updates came out at least once a week, often daily. If a
serious new virus or trojan is circulating, will AVG release updated
definitions right away, or will they stick to their once a month schedule?

I believe they update as/when they feel the need to AND if there are any
'URGENT' updates.

I certainly seem to get them more than once a month.

mine updates a couple of times a week... i think the update manager
defaults to 30 days. you need to change that.

i just checked mine.. it had 9/15/04 as the virus database, did an update
and it downloaded a new version, now it shows 9/16/04..

That would be incorrect. It updates almost daily.

Apparently updates are released once a month.

Incorrect. I've received updates three times in the same day and they
*average* one every two-three days in my estimation.

The first thing you need to do is to double click on the AVG
symbol in the System Tray (Beside the Clock).

Then Click on the Update Manager Tab.

1. Make sure that there is a tick besides the "Allow Scheduled
Update".

2. Select a time of your choice or accept the default.

3. Where it says "Update if database is older than:" enter 1 day.

4. Then where it says "If not successful, then repeat in:" also
enter 1 day.

5. If you are on dial up then you will also need to put a tick in
the box beside the "User Confirms Dial Up Connection" BUT if you
have a broadband Internet Connection, then leave that box clear!

_ _ _ _

AVG will then check for updates every day at your preset time, so
long as the PC is switched on of course!

PS: As another person has already answered, it also best to
manually check for updates when ever possible! As there have been
somes days when they release updates more than once a day!

Best Wishes.

Where does the software say that it only updates once a month?

I read this in the AVG help file, and it led me to conclude that
updates were only released once a month:

<<How to get Updated files

The developer of the AVG system, GRISOFT, releases new Updated files
monthly - usually you can find new updated files at the beginning of each
month. >>

Thanks for the useful information. If I may ask, it appears as
though AVG free edition does not scan Outlook Express (which is what I'm
using). Is that true? From what I've read, it appears only Microsoft
Outlook is supported. So should I remove all the check mark in the email
settings area?

The help file was very poorly worded. What they meant was the program
application files are updated monthly.
The virus definitions are updated as often as needed to be current with new
viruses.

It scans Outlook Express - once the *Outlook Express 5 plug-in* is enabled
(tip - uncheck the certify messages boxes!). It doesn't necessarily clean
infected attachments well, however. The situation can arise where it pops up
a warning about an infected message, you acknowledge it and when you try to
delete the message in question AVG pops up again. This happens over and over
and the way to delete the virus is to disable the OE plug-in, delete the
message, then re-enable the plug-in.

btw the plug-in works for OE6 too.

Thanks a lot for the info. Why do you recommend unchecking the
certify message boxes?

Because, not to put to fine a point on it, it's a lie.

I believe the signature is still not RFC compliant. When you quote
someone's post or email, the signature remains.

Correct, because it begins with "---" and not "-- "
