Hi All,
I have lots of .jpg's which no longer work, they appear to be corrupt. On
opening them Windows Fax and Picture Viewer says 'No Preview Available'.
The story was that they were transferred from one machine to another via an
external hard drive as a new machine had been bought.. There are far more
..jpg's (about ten times more) which still work correctly. Is there anything
that can be one to repair them, or are they gone forever? I don't know if
this is a factor, but the old machine only had a USB1 so it took forever to
transfer the fifteen or so megs of files we wanted to transfer and about 15
minutes to put them on the new one which has a USB2,
Any advice appreciated,
Regards,
Alan.

You would have to repair each one seperately unless you you have a program
to do it all at once as a batch job. What I would do is put each jpg that
is corrupted and get the free program on the net IrfanView:

http://www.irfanview.com/

Then you can use the arrows in the toolbar to open each one successively.
Irfan is good it should be able to open them. Then save them with a
different name if you have to. That should fix them all. Now the fact that
they do not have a preview may not mean they are corrupted. For example the
JPEG 2000 format is not previewable in Windows although they use the common
jpg extension; but see if Irfan can give you what you want.

I tried Ifran as you suggested but unfortunately that viewer also says they
are corrupt. Thanks anyway for the response, its much appreciated,
Regards,
Alan.

really!!! wow then they really are corrupted I'd say of course assuming they
are not JPEG 2000 format.. Post one here as an attachment I will see what I
can do.

I don't think attachments are allowed on these groups and I don't want to
break the rules. I could mail one to you personally if that's not being too
presumptuous, would you mind if I did that? My address is alanb9761 at
ntlworld.com - I use a phoney on here to avoid the spammers,
Regards and thanks,
Alan.

Well you can but or could at one time. Otherwise just go ahead and mail the
attachment to my e-mail address here. It is real. I was looking into this.
It seems there really is no way to fix a corrupted Jpeg. What I am hoping
is the start of the binary is all that is corrupted but I well have to see
one for sure.
