Jpg views crash explorer in XP

B

Bob

Whenever I try to browse folders in Explorer or even in
opening a file (in all programs) in a folder with jpgs,
Explorer crashes. Not all jpgs, but just some-- and I
can't seem to figure out which ones will become
unaccessible.

Big problem since I have many thousands of photos on my
computer, and most in jpg format. A large number of them
(dozens of folders) are completely unaccessible.
Sometimes have to resort to DOS to change the names of
the files (having to guess which ones) to access the
folder.

Is it something in how XP reads the .jpg extension and
assigns an Icon (then why isn't the problem consistent
across all jpgs?) Is there something in XP's photo
viewer that could be corrupted? Something I could
reinstall? I've tried changing associations for jpgs to
no effect.

Please help. I'm at my wits end. Some of the error info
is below. Thanks, Bob

ntdll.dll

Is your video driver a current XP version?

Do you happen to have Adobe PhotoShop or
Elements installed?

If you do...right click on a .jpg file and choose
Properties. Click the Photoshop Image tab
and uncheck the "Generate Thumbnails" button,
then click OK.

John,
Thanks for the advice. Changed the association from
Photoshop to another program and no more problems! Will
look at reinstalling Photoshop.

I am experiencing that same problem. The fault seems to
revolve around the amount of graphic files and how deep a
directory they are stored in. A workaround is to move the
directory with the graphic files up higher, usually I just
go to the root. This is an unsat solution for me, I don't
want the root directory loaded up. I too, have thousands
of graphic files, many from my digital camera and many
from researching the net on various topics, usually earth
and space science related. I really want to find the
right solution to this problem - it is affecting two of my
computers right now.

You have solved the problem...I don't
think it's necessary to reinstall PhotoShop.

Thanks for the update.
