Annotating .jpg images in XP

In 2KPro, the default image viewer (Kodak Imaging) allowed annotating on
jpgs, but in XP it seems you only get the annotation tools when viewing
..tiffs. Is there any way to annotate .jpg images within XP (without having to
buy a new program)? Paint does not allow you to return to text annotations to
edit.

Have you tried right clicking a .jpg or
a selected group of .jpgs and go to...
Properties / Summary tab / Advanced
button?

Select the field you wish to update
and begin typing.

Thanks but no--- I mean to draw, highlight, or type directly on the image. If
you open a tiff, you get all those annotation tools, but if you open a jpeg,
you don't. Jpgs bring up an 'editing' button (on the bottom right, just
before the Help button), but that takes you to Paint which has the
disadvantage mentioned in original post.

And that's why the methods I offered would be
worth considering.

..jpgs cannot be saved with layers...no matter
what you add to the face of a .jpg it will be flattened
when you resave it as a .jpg.

Advanced image editing software allows layers
that can be re-edited at a future time but the images
would have to be saved in a proprietary format.

Do tiffs normally save in layers? If so, I see what you mean and that would
explain it....

So if I don't mind the annotations becoming permanent upon saving, is there
a way to annotate on the face of a jpg in XP? Paint is no good eg. because it
doesn't allow you to edit text once you leave the text box. I would want to
be able to do simple editing with simple tools (like circling an item in a
photo and writing in its cost) with the annotations editable until I save.

Just a thought...

Since you are familiar with the annotation
options for TIFF files...why not convert your
JPEGs to TIFF?

Before last week's upgrade from 2KPro to XP, my procedure was as follows:
1. Very hi-resolution archive photo
2. Saved as email sized jpg to send to clients.
3. Item circled and price typed in over jpg photo using the 2KPro default
image viewer (Kodak Imaging).

Don't want to have to reconvert hundreds of photos to low-res tiffs (in
addition to the jpegs I already have).....

I have in fact managed to install my old Kodak Imaging into my XP, but out
of curiosity it seemed to me XP should have this ability to write on jpgs.
within its own system....Does it not?

Will look at the new version of paint as you suggested, but since I just
installed my new XP last week, I would imagine it is what I have.....

A batch reformat would be quite easy
but it was just a suggestion.

Different program entirely...

The version of Paint you have is the same
one that was included with Windows 98.
The website I posted offers a new version
created by some students who thought it
was time for an update.

Will its annotations be readable by the average XP owner (eg my clients)? My
tiff annotations in Kodak Imaging were not readable by XP users unless the
annotations were made permanent.
