I received jpeg images from someone and tried to open them in windows photo
gallery. It says the file is not supported or I do not have the current
updates. I know I have current updates so what else do I do ?

From Windows Help and Support:

What picture file formats are supported by Photo Gallery?
Photo Gallery will show pictures and videos with any of these file types:
BMP
JPEG
JFIF
TIFF
PNG
WDP
ASF
AVI
MPEG
WMV
Photo Gallery can only display videos if Windows Movie Maker is installed.
If you remove Movie Maker, you might not be able to see video files.
For more information about these file types, see Understanding picture file
types.

If you open Windows Photo Gallery/File Menu/Add Folder to Gallery and browse
to where the required JPEGs are it should recognise them.

It may help to run it as Admininistrator.
