Windows Explorer will NOT add tags to JPEGs

S

Steve Furse

I am using Vista Home Premium

I used to be able to add meta-data in the way of "tags" to jpeg files. But
now, Windows Explorer cannot seem to get the job done. It will let me go
through the process, but when it comes time to Save my changes, I get "Error
# 0x88982F50 No error description available".

Microsoft Photo Gallery will accept new/change tags on jpegs, but those
changes do NOT show up in Windows Explorer.

In what may be a related problem, Microsoft Photo Gallery will allow me to
edit photos (crop for size, adjust color, contrast, etc.), but is unable to
then Save the file.

Any help, info, tips are gratefully accepted.

Does this problem persist across file types? By this I mean that if you
attempt to edit the tags of other files, such as MP3 or WMV files, do
you get the same error?

Steps to take would include running a CHKDSK on the drive, allowing
Vista to fix any errors. Also try updating your virus definitions and
running a full system scan.

If that doesn't work, open a command prompt as an administrator
(Start->All Program->Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, select Run
As Administrator), then type the command *SFC /scannow*. This will
repair from backup any damaged system files.

Thanks for the reply. I tried the stuff you suggested.

1. Yes, Windows Explorer can & will edit "tags" and also "categories" for
other file types (tested Excel, Word, and WMV files).

2. Ran Chkdsk /F , no change.

3. Windows Defender's definitions are as of 10/29/07, scan today found no
problems.

4. SFC /scannow also found nothing (Yes, I ran it from an Adminstrator
Command Prompt).

Again, Microsoft Photo Gallery will accept multiple tags on JPEG files and
retain them through a reboot. But these tags will NOT show up in Windows
Explorer.

I don't know but suspect that Vista has somehow "lost track of" something.
Perhaps a file/app association, I really don't know. On the one hand this
seems minor, on the other hand this is specifically something Microsoft
marketed/talks about with Vista. Meaning ease of using Windows Explorer to
"tag" files for later searches etc.

Ok, I just noticed something in Photo Gallery when I "Tag" many items
at once.

In the bottom-left corner of the Photo Gallery window, you should see
text that says how many items are in the current view, and how many are
selected.

If, after applying your "Tags", a blue icon appears to the left of this
text, it means that Photo Gallery is still busy writing those tags to
the files. Pausing your mouse over this icon will say how
files/thumbnails still need to be updated.

If this icon is there to begin with, then it means your Photo Gallery
library has not yet been fully initialized. Click on *All Pictures and
Videos* and wait a while (couple of hours did it for me) untill that
"updating" icon is no longer there.

OK, I'll try this out. I just gave Photo Gallery a quick check and saw the
blue
icon you were refering to. I'll want to explore the "initialization"
process you
mentioned and will post any updates.

Ok, I've played with Photo Gallery and found that blue icon you were
talking about. However, it appears to only come on when I've tagged a
large number of files. So it seems to have already been initialized.

But the problem still persists in Windows Explorer. Whenever I try to
add or delete a tag (on a JPEG file) from the Details pane, I get a
message about "Error 0x88982F50: No error description available".
Tags added or deleted through Photo Gallery are simply not recognized
in Windows Explorer at all.

While this particular problem seems specific to Windows Explorer, this
is not the first time that Vista has "forgotten" something. At one point
Windows Mail had forgotten that it was my default email agent. But I
found a solution in another newsgroup.

Thank you for trying to help

The error code implies a problem with a component missing in the jpg codec.
Have you perhaps downloaded a codec pack / improved codec etc ?

Ok, two messages to respond to. First:

mx.forums.net...
I wonder if this problem is related to the one I have sometimes.

Have you ever tried using Windows Explorer's feature under details to
"Remove Properties and Personal Information"? It might not be related to
your issue, but sometimes when I try to use that feature, it does
nothing. Oh, it removed the properties I tell it to, but if I go back
into the details of a particular file, then they are back.

And also:

The error code implies a problem with a component missing in the jpg
codec. Have you perhaps downloaded a codec pack / improved codec etc ?

Michael

Whether I try the Details pane of Windows Explorer or right-click,
choose Properties and then the Details tab, I still get the same error
message quoted earlier. And the "Remove Properties and Personal
Information" tab really doesn't really do anything since I can't add
anything to be removed.

But now that I look at "Remove Properties and Personal Information"
thing, I'm noticing that files that used to show tags in Windows
Explorer no longer show any tags at all. The same files show tags
when viewed through Photo Gallery, but not in Windows Explorer.

About the jpg codec, I don't really know what that is so I know that I
have not downloaded one deliberately. However, I do let Vista update
itself automatically.

Is it possible to have caused this by using the Assoc command in the
Command Prompt to change the file association for jpg files to Paint,
and then back to jpegfile? Could this action have caused some
internal setting in Vista to "misalign" or be "forgotten"? I'm
guessing because I don't know.
