joy.cpl not responding

Hello

I recently this encountered an error when trying to install an MS
sidewinder gamepad (Game port) and a wired Xbox 360 gamepad (USB).

Basically whenever I double-click on the "Game Controllers Icon" in
control panel or if I manually try to access the joy.cpl (through "Run"
or in system32) nothing happens. The game controller menu does not
appear at all.

The file does exist in the system32 directory however. I have searched
various places, but none have come up with a good/suitable solution.

I am wondering whether you can manually copy the joy.cpl file from the
XP Home disk to the system32 folder or do I need to repair XP - If so
is there a way to do it without losing my data on my hard drive?

Thank you in advanced.

Hi [email protected],

Yes, you can expand the file from your Windows XP CD to your PC.
Search for joy.cp* to find the location of the compressed file on the CD.
Then click START > RUN > and type: msconfig
In the System Configuration Utility > General Tab click "Expand File..."
Browse to the files, and let the utility do it's thing. Reboot afterwards.

Thanks for the reply, but I am still confused on the Msconfig screen
where it asks "File to restore", "Restore From" and "Save File in"

My understanding is of the following:

File to Restore - Select the joy.cpl in the C:/Windows/System32

Restore From - I assume from the disc but it asks only for .CAB files,
therefore I would like to know which ones?

Save File in - Where you want to save the new file C:/Windows/System32

Please correct my if I am wrong.

Thank You

Hi jedikv,

The Windows XP .cab files are stored in the I386 folder on the Windows XP (CD).
Search those .cab files (they are treated like compressed folders) for joy.cp_

And yes, the file you want to restore is in C:/Windows/System32 and will be
restored to the same location (C:/Windows/System32).

Here's the Microsoft KB article which explains the process:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q310435/

Hello

Thank you for the advice and the link. This solution seems to work and
my computer detects my devices.

The only problem is that it only works with the XP disk inserted and
then the MSConfig menu comes up during startup.

Also a notice comes up asking me to restart the computer and another
dialogue box appears saying that I have to change MSConfig from
diagnostic mode to normal, however it says that it will revert back to
original settings (something along those lines).

What should be done? Sorry to keep asking

Thanks in Advanced

Hi jedikv,

Since the joy.cpl component is now working, and MSCONFIG
was able to expand the file from that location, then yes, it is. :)

Hi jedikv,

To return MSCONFIG to Normal Startup mode, we just need
to click on the "Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services"
Startup Selection on the General Tab in the MSCONFIG utility, and
then click Apply.

Hello,

Thanks for the advice, however now the joy.cpl is not responding again,
even if I try to expand the file from the XP disk. Nothing seems to
work and the file seems to have reverted back to the orignal "broken"
file.

Sorry to keep asking, is there a solution. I'll keep trying the
expanding method in the mean time.

Thanks in Advanced.

Hi jedikv,

Your best solution would be to repair Windows using these instructions:

How to repair Windows XP:
Unplug from your Internet connection, and then repair Windows:
using this method: http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Afterwards, boot up your system, turn on your XP Internet Firewall,
plug back into your Internet connection and install all Critical and
Recommended updates from: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Will this involve wiping the hard-drive?

Hi jedikv,

No. A repair does not involve wiping the hard-drive.
