Joining a Windows 2000 domain

I'm running a Windows 2000 Server machine which is acting
as a Domain Controller on my local network at my
apartment. The Windows 98 machine I have can join the
domain its running with no problems. However, when I
tried to join my Windows XP Pro machine to the domain, it
doesn't work... this is an excerpt of the error I get:

"The domain name markham might be a NetBIOS domain name.
If this is the case, verify that the domain name is
properly registered with WINS.

If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain
name, then the following information can help you
troubleshoot your DNS configuration.

DNS was successfully queried for the service location
(SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller
for domain markham:

The query was for the SRV record for
_ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.markham

The following domain controllers were identified by the
query:

satellite.markham

Common causes of this error include:

- Host (A) records that map the name of the domain
controller to its IP addresses are missing or contain
incorrect addresses.

- Domain controllers registered in DNS are not connected
to the network or are not running."

So I guess its finding the domain but it won't join. I
tried doing an nslookup. What I get is this:

Default Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.1.100

Any ideas on how i can get the system to recognize the
server? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

This is a DNS error.

It has queried DNS for a domain controller name, and has gotten it.
( satellite.markham - is that the name of your server? )
But the subsequent query for an IP address failed.

The NSLOOKUP output you give:
Default Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.1.100

Indicates you are using a DNS server at 192.168.1.100.
Presumably this is your server.
Probably, since the initial query worked.
The 'UnKnown' indicates a reverse DNS failure, because you have not
set up reverse lookup zone for 192.168.1 subnet.
That's a bit slack, but not fatal.

So you need to look at the DNS server, and see why the forward lookup
zone for your domain does not include the server.
Go the the server, and open up the DNS server console.
Look for the domain's zone.

-On the server, ensure it points to itself as a DNS server.
-Ensure the DNS forward lookup zone is set to permit dynamic updates.
-On the server machine, do a ipconfig /registerdns to register the names.
-Then try an F5 to refresh the DNS console display.
-You NEED to see the server having an A (host ) record in DNS.
