I don't know if I'm ignorant or something, but when I plug
in my laptop to any domain I can automatically browse the
network I'm plugged into. My laptop has XP home.
If you're currently logging in locally (with the PC in a workgroup), joining a
domain will allow you to use a domain userid / profile on that PC. It shouldn't
affect the profile of the local userid.
Of course, if there are features (shortcuts, icons, installed software, etc)
associated with the local userid, those will (if desired) have to be manually
copied to the domain profile. But the local user profile itself won't be
affected.

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
That's the problem. I can join the domain just fine but it creates another
User profile that does not contain all my shortcuts, documents, etc. I
don't want to have to maintain this stuff in two separate areas so I really
just want to make my current workgroup profile the new domain profile (if
that makes sense).
I believe you want to map your local profile to the profile used in the
domain. I think you will need to get access or ask your admin to change
your profile in the AD to load from your c drive. So when you log in
local, it will use the c drive profile and when you login on the domain
side you will use the profile on the c dirve and not create a domain one.
