JETCOMP utility install question

I recently downloaded a Jet Database Compact Utility
called JETCOMP.exe and stored it in C:\Programs ...
Office. There seems to be another larger but related
file left on my desktop called JetCU40.exe, described as
a Win32 Cabinet Self-Extractor. What should I do with
this 2nd file? Is running it necessary to install the
entire utility? If so should I move it to the same folder
as JETCOMP.exe before running it?

Any response will be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure that's not the install (setup) program ?
If it is, and it's already been installed, you don't need that
anymore.
Try deleting it (thus putting it into the recycle bin) and seeing
if the tool still works?

Hi Percy,

Jetcu40.exe is the file that you download and then double-click on to
produce the executable file that you need, which is called JETCOMP.exe.

JETCOMP.exe is the utility that you run to compact/repair the Jet 3.5 or Jet
4 engines. You are right about the size differences. The Jetcu40.exe
installation file is 111 KB, while the JETCOMP.exe utility file is 64 KB.

In any case, do your compact/repairs using the JETCOMP.exe file.

Hi Dave,

I really appreciate your quick response as well as the
quick responses postings to this newsgroup get in general.

I downloaded the utility file to try to repair an Access
file that was prevented from opening by a strange error
message claiming someone else was simultaneously trying
to use the data. Well, the download didn't fix it. So
while I'm waiting to see if a local professional shop can
fix it I'll record my current data to a similar database
file and see if the compact/repair function still works
before, then after I trash the JetCU40.exe.

Thanks again,

Percy

Hi Alan,

Thanks for the quick reply. My reply to Dave's posting,
above, details my problem a little more. Any further
comment or advice you'd care to offer (i.e. if you know
much about Access bugs) is always welcome.

Best,

Percy

Hello again Percy,

Yes, I have experience with Access bugs, as I am an MS Access developer.

When I have encountered a corrupted database that JETCOMP.EXE could not fix,
I was able to totally retrieve all information, by importing all the objects
from the damaged DB into a new one, by using the code found in the KB
article at:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;298176&Product=acc97

You also might want to post your question at the microsoft.public.access
newsgroup. There are a lot of people there who are very knowledgeable about
Access.
