Compressed dll files, icons, windows components...

Hi I have a few problems with XP Home Ed.

I recently had a virus and did a repair install of Windows XP to replace
some damaged files, and then I reinstalled SP2. I then removed some Windows
components ( Games and Accesories) by mistake. When I try reinstalling them
with Add/Remove components I get a copy error message that some files cant be
copied even though I browse to the right location on the XP cd. Also it seems
all seem dll files are compressed as they end with dl_ instead. I tried to
unpack them using Win32 Cabinet Self-Extractor but then I get a message that
says "A resource was not available", or something like that, when I try and
open it. How do I get these file back and restore the components
My volume control and Media player also seems to have disappeared.

Also, all my word document icons have changed to icon of a page with a
little window on it, although the documents still work when I open them. I
treid using Tweak UI to repair them, but that didnt work.

Since I did the repair install my pc is also alot more sluggish. I ran
defrag but it didnt help much.

Please help with these problem.
Thank you

Sorry I failed to mention I ran Panda anti-virus and it neutralised the
threat. I did the repair install to replace some damaged files.

Nope, it did not. What part of the posted article was not clear enough?
I did the repair install to replace some damaged files.

Do not waste even more time and perform a clean install from scratch.
