Jet 4.0 SP8 - do I need it?

T

Tcs

(I asked this question last week in a different group. And I really didn't get
the answer I needed. All I basically got was "Here's where to find the Service
Pack." Seeing as I already *had* the Service Pack, this really didn't do me a
whole lot of good.)

What I want to know is, do I just "automatically" apply it? The *basic*
question is: Do I apply it?

Most files seem to be different sizes. One or more files what I already *have*
is/are a higher version number than what's in the service pack. I can't go by
dates, as MS didn't supply dates with the SP docs.

Here's what I have:

Operating System Service Packs I pretty much always apply, after I wait for a
period of time to "let the dust settle". But this isn't the OS.

I would be grateful if someone could please enlighten me as to the correct
procedure regarding this service pack. (And other non-OS packs in general.) I
have made *mulitple* visits to both the Windows Update and Office Update
websites. Neither of which even "hinted" toward me needing to install this
Service Pack, whether mandatory or optional.

Do I? Or don't I? (And why?)

Thanks in advance,

Tom

You already have SP8 installed.

If you install SP8 again, it won't overwrite any files that are newer. So,
it really doesn't matter whether you do or not....what is the question?

T

"what is the question?"

Do I install it? Why do I ask? Because I'm confused.

I'm looking at three (3) machines here. Two (2) are XP, sp1, and the third is
w2k, sp4. While it *is* possible that I've been using the two Xp machines long
enough (Desktop for over a year, Laptop for 6 months) that I've forgotten what
I've applied, But the same cannot be said the the third (w2k) machine. I
installed the OS & O2k less than 2 weeks ago. And I *know* that I did *not*
apply Jet 4.0 SP8. But neither the Windows Update site, nor the Office Update
site (seeing as I'm dealing with Access 2000 here), mentioned the Jet 4.0 SP8,
either for "Express" or "Custom". On the Windows Update that goes for "High
Priority", "Software, Optional" or "Hardware, Optional".

(In searching the newsgroups before asking the question (previously), I came
across a msg from someone (MS employee perhaps?) who said that this service pack
would be moved to the Windows Update site.)

Do I install it, "Just because MS issued it."? Is the Service pack installer
"smart enough" to not replace any one individual file that may be newer than
what's in the service pack? While the dates and times of the two (2) XP
machines vary (the second xp box looks like the first, in my previous post), all
the dates and times of the newer w2k machine are "8/18/2005 1:13:nn PM". Well,
here, have a look...

Jet is considered an OS feature now, so, an update to Jet could've been
installed by any number of other OS rollup type updates and not as a
separate update. In any case, I'd apply it to each PC. It wouldn't
overwrite newer files anyway, and you'd know that each PC has SP8 installed.
Whether the dates or file version are different or not.
