jdbgmgr.exe

Maurice J. Smith

I received the e-mail below from a friend of mine, I
followed through on what he said and deleted jdbgmgr.exe,
then I wondered if I did the right thing. I am very much a
novice and need help!!

Questions:
1. Did I do the right thing?
2. What is jdbgmgr?
3. How does it apply to me?

Thanks,
Maurice

To everyone in our address book:
I just got sent this email from my aunt, sure enough, i
did a search and found the virus this email is talking
about. I heard about it a few days ago on the radio.
Please follow the directions below, just to check if you
have it or not. Thanks.

Take care everyone,

Hello everyone...

Unfortunately, a virus has been passed on to me by a
contact. My
address book WAS infected.

Since you are in my address book, there is a good chance
you will find
it in your computer too. My sincere apologies.

The virus (called jdbgmgr.exe) is not detected by Norton
or McAfee
antivirus systems. The virus sits quietly for 14 days
before damaging the
system. It is sent automatically by messenger and by the
address book,
whether or not you sent e-mail to your contacts.

Here's how to check for the virus and how to get rid of it:

YOU MUST DO THIS.

1. Go to start, Find or search option.
2. In the file folder option, type the name jdbgmgr.exe
3. Be sure you search your C: drive and all subfolders and
any other drives you may have.
4. Click "find now"
5. The Virus has a Teddy Bear icon with the name
jdbgmgr.exe DO NOT OPEN IT!
6. Go to Edit (on the menu bar) and choose "select all" to
highlight the file without opening it.
7. Now go to File (on the menu bar) and select delete. It
will then go
to the Recycle Bin.
8. IF YOU FIND THE VIRUS YOU MUST CONTACT ALL THE PEOPLE
IN YOUR
ADDRESS BOOK, SO THEY CAN ERADICATE IT IN THEIR OWN
ADDRESS BOOKS.
To Do This:
a) Open a new e-mail message
b) Click the icon of the address book next to the "TO"
c) Highlight every name and add to "BCC" (which means
blind copy)
d) Copy this message and paste to e-mail
I have followed these direction sent by someone to me and
was able to easily delete the virus. Sorry for the
inconvenience.

FORTUNATELY, IT'S NOT TOO HARD TO ERADICATE. THIS MUST BE
THE PRICE OF HAVING SUCH CONVENIENCES AS EMAIL!

This is a hoax. But you really didn't hurt anything by deleting jdbgmgr. It
is a file used in JAVA programming, and if you aren't doing any of that it
won't hurt being gone.

If by some chance, you've not yet emptied your recycle bin then open it up
Right-click your mouse on the file jdbgmgr.exe and choose Restore from the
menu that pops up

Just go to your System Restor and restor prior to the deletion and all will
be well again.

Maurice,

As you've heard, what you did in this case was wrong but harmless.
But it still should teach you something: When you get a message
like this, don't rush to do what it tells you without thinking a
moment. Hoax messages vary, but many follow common patterns:

-Contains screechy/panicky text using caps and exclamation points.
-Gratuitous reference to well-known companies: Microsoft/McAfee/etc
-Urges you to forward it to everyone you know [*that's* the "virus']
-Comes from someone who isn't all that computer-savvy

Since none of us know the purpose of each of the tens of thousands
of files on a typical PC, next time you might delete an essential
file and be severely up a creek. A VERY easy way to find out is:
do a Google search for "hoax" plus a key word or phrase from the
message. Try it now: Go to google.com and type this in the box:

jdbgmgr.exe hoax

Then hit your Enter key, and read just 1 or 2 of the 10,000-plus
messages explaining it.

Once you understand this, it might be a good thing to explain it
to "everyone you know," or at least to the people who forward you
this stuff. Sometimes those people know full well that they're
forwarding nonsense, but they adore being the bearer of shocking
purple news.

Whether or not that's true, cure them: If they dismiss you and
insist they do it "just to be safe," explain that circulating a
virus hoax works AGAINST computing safety. Reason: It increases
the possibility that its victims won't take seriously the next
warning(s), which could very well be legitimate. That's because
people who panic because of a hoax and then later find out it
was BS are generally a lot less receptive to later warnings.
Insert boy-who-cried-wolf bromide here. That means an overall
*rise* in the number of novice users who can catch viruses and
not know or care and who can therefore infect other computers.
So everyone's risk *increases if a hoax is allowed to spread.
