I have a notification icon regarding Java 2 Runtime Environment
v.1.4.2_03-b02. What's the deal with this, should I update as the icon is
prompting? I'm running xp home (oem) IE6 original os (comp is 2 yrs old)

This icon appeared as you have installed JavaVM software previously.
It helps in running java related apps.
you should update.
