Java Question

M

Magsmom

Don't know where to start looking for answsers so I am starting here. I have
recently been having a lot of problems with getting those nasty little red
"x"s instead of pictures or graphics in e mails or in online games etc. One
game site support page article indicated it might be a problem with my Java
Runtime program and suggested I might not have the latest version. In
checking my computer, I find that I do have program files for Java listed
but
they don't seem to be working. When I go to my Control Panel and double
click on the Java Icon, it tells me that I am missing a registry key.
I know I should probably be looking for answers on the Java website, but
honestly, even though I am considered to be more than a novice with
computers, they are way over my head. Can someone give me some simple and
easy to follow advice in this matter? I am running XP, SP2 with IE 7.0

Magsmom, you cannot view applets in either OE or Windows Mail unless you
have MS JVM installed. Support for MS JVM ended Dec 31, 2007 and I would
definitely NOT install it. See this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/default.mspx

If you have MS JVM and want to uninstall it, I've found this website to be
useful: http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/WindowsXP/java.php
The manual uninstall method should work okay for you.

You should be able to view applets in any webpage if you have Sun JRE (Java
Runtime Environment) installed. You can install it from here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

I would first uninstall any older versions of Sun JRE in add/remove programs
before installing the newer version of Sun JRE.

Hope this helps.

Richard: Thanks for your help. I was able to successfully delete all of the
previous versions of Java that was on my Add/remove program list and I
successfully downloaded the newest updated version of Java - BUT:- I am still
getting the little red X's instead of pictures. Example: Yahoo has an
online card game that I used to play by the name of "Addiction". It is a
Gamehouse game. Now when I go to Yahoo>games>card>Addiction>play now: All I
get is a big blank page with the little red x in it. I am running Windows
Live One Care Antivirus, firewall etc. suite and have my internet options
settings set for default medium security and privacy. Is there a setting in
these internet options settings that could be causing these lttle red x's?

You're very welcome. I went to yahoo.com > games > card > Addiction
Solitaire and it displayed correctly and the java game worked fine for me
with Sun JRE only installed. Does the applet on this page:
http://www.anfyteam.com work okay for you? If not, does it work for you
in firefox (if you have firefox)?

It sounds like your default medium security and privacy settings should be
okay. You could compare them against these:
http://richard-and-michaela.com?xp_ie7_oe6_settings

Also, you may want to try this with the browser windows closed:
Go to 'Control Panel' > 'Java(TM) Control Panel' > 'Advanced' tab >
'Default Java for browsers' section and uncheck 'Microsoft Internet
Explorer', apply the change and close the Java Control Panel. Then
delete the TIF and open IE and go here: http://www.anfyteam.com
Of course the applet won't be working. Next, close IE, delete the TIF and
go back to the Java Control Panel and check 'Microsoft Internet Explorer'
apply the change, etc. Then open IE again and go back to the anfy webpage
and hopefully the applet will work fine and all applets will work fine in IE
with Sun JRE only installed. I ran into this problem some time ago (running
IE6, not IE7) with the red-x showing instead of the applet image and I
finally stumbled into the above through trial and error to fix it.

Richard: Sorry I didn't get back to you with feedback sooner. The last
month was kind of wild so I have just gotten around to following up on this
problem. Here is where it stands now:
The applet on http://www.anfyteam.com worked fine with the IE7 but I still
get the little red X's on the Yahoo game site. I followed your instructions
to check my settings on ie against the link you gave me, and after making
sure all my settings were consistant with yours, it will would not work. I
had installed Firefox some time ago but had not gotten around to checking it
out, so I tried it. No Problem opening the Yahoo games with Firefox browser.

I use Office Outlook, not OE so I did not go through those procedures.

I'm a little unclear about part of your instructions to go to my Java
through control panel. You said: "Then delete the TIF and open IE and go
here:". What TIF am I supposed to delete?

Also, since my last posting about this problem, iWin downloaded and
installed a new game manager update, and now I am getting the little red x's
in the game listing. I also keep getting messages about script errors and a
message that I need to download and install Macromedia Flash Player (which I
was pretty sure I already had), but when I click on the supplied link, I get
a message that "one or more ActiveX controls could not be displayed, then
another script error, but I did get the download page for the Adobe Flash
Player and I was not able to get it downloaded correctly. I am going to try
again while I wait to hear back from you. I really appreciate your help with
this. It is driving me crazy.

Magsmom, if the anfy applet works for you then I don't know why the game
applet won't. They all work fine for me on both XP SP3 and Vista HP SP1 with
the latest Sun JRE installed. I guess you could uninstall and reinstall Java
and see if that helps. Also, I always uninstall any previous version of Sun
JRE through add/remove programs before installing the latest version.

Didn't know you weren't using OE. The TIF is the Temporary Internet Files.

Don't know why flash doesn't work for you. Works fine here in both XP and
Vista. You can see here if it's installed:
http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/about/

Here's some troubleshooting info:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_19166

Some people have had to uninstall:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157
....and then reinstall flash to get it to work.

I don't know what else to suggest. Good luck with it.

There are several ways to delete Temporary Internet Files (aka browser
cache). (And this might solve your problem.)

Here's one way:

1. Close IE.
2. Right-click IE icon and select Properties.
3. Click the Delete button in the Browsing history section of the
General tab. In the Delete browsing hostory window, delete the
following:

Temporary Internet Files
Cookies

Here's another way:

Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Cleanup

As a rule, you only need to check the Temporary Internet Files and
Temporary files boxes. Then click OK.

By the way, deleting browser cache should be done regularly to help
improve performance.

Richard:
Duh! I had a senior moment. I should have known TIF meant Temporary
Internet files.

I checked my internet options settings against yours, item by item, and
discovered the following irregularities:
On the Security Tab:
1. I have an item named .NET Framework-reliant components, which is checked
for "High Safety".
2. I have an item for Java VM:
Java Permission, checked for "High Safety"

On the Advanced Tab:
1. Between my section on Java Sun & Multimedia Services, I have a section
for Microsoft VM, which you do not have. It has 3 items:
Java Console enabled is checked
Java Logging enabled is not checked
JIT Compiler for VM enabled is checked

2. Your Phishing filter for Automatic Website checking is turned off, mine
was turned off.

My Java console indicates that I have Java Standard Version 6

Do you see anything there that could be a problem?

R

Richard Eagle

Magsmom, from your reply it looks like you have MS JVM installed.
I advise everyone to uninstall it as it is no longer supported:
http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/default.mspx
The manual uninstall method here:
http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/WindowsXP/java.php
....should work okay for you.

Applets should work fine with Sun JRE only installed.

AAARRRGGGHH! Richard - I removed the MS VM and I also deleted the files as
recommended on the webpage you sent me to and I restarted my puter, but
nothing seems to have changed.

What I can't seem to wrap my mind around is this:

Why does the little red X for the Yahoo Addiction card game show up when I
use IE but not when I use Firefox????

R

Richard Eagle

Sorry Magsmom. I don't know why it doesn't work for you. There's nothing
else that I can suggest.

Thanks for trying Richard. I do appreciate your efforts. I did find one
thing that got fixed throughout this effort though. Previously, when I
received the e mail that someone had replied to me on this board, the link in
the e mail would not work and I would have to manually open IE and go to the
board etc. Now the link works.

Richard:
I just ran into something strange, that may (or may not) shed any light on
this problem. I went to a new gamesite that has a lot of crossword and Soduko
puzzles and wheneverI try to access one of the puzzles, I get the following
message:-
"You need Java enabled to view the crossword applet."

Now, as far as I can tell, I have Java installed and enabled. I have
checked my settings for internet explorer, firewall and Java console. Where
else can I look??

R

Richard Eagle

Magsmom, I don't have a clue know why it's doing that. I'm all out of ideas.
Good luck with it.

Open Internet Options, Security tab, Internet icon, click Custom Level.
Scroll down to "Scripting", near the bottom, and make sure "Scripting
of Java Applets" is "Enabled". Or just "Reset to Medium", click Reset,
as a test. Restart IE before checking if it worked.

Look in Advanced tab section that "Java (Sun)" is checked too.

Dear Jo:
Yep! Scripting of Java applets already checked.
Yep! Java Sun already checked.
However, I think I may have found something on the Java Website but Haven't
had a chance to check it out yet.
This sure is a puzzle. God I love/hate computers!

In case you missed my other post...

Did you ever empty your browser cache?

Oh yeah! That was a gimmie. I have been doing that on a regular
basis all
along.

A few more things:

1. Go to http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Click on "Do I jave Java?"

(I just did this. It looks like _I_ need to update it!)

Apparently, the current version is Version 6, Update 6. Is this what you
have?

Also, I always prefer downloading the complete ("Offline") package. If
you go to:

http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

you will see a link for "Windows XP/Vista/2000/2003 Offline" (filesize:
15.18 MB -- clicking on this will allow you to save the installation
file to your hard drive). Also note the "Instructions" link on the same
line. Finally, there is a link to verify:

http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

2. Did you ever resolve the "missing a registry key: issue mentioned in
your first post?

3. Do you have Flash installed *and* enabled? Go here:

"Test Adobe Shockwave & Flash Players"
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/

Even if Flash is installed, you might have a setting that makes it seem
as if it is not installed. For example, SpywareBlaster has a setting
called Kill Flash.

M

Magsmom

Daave:
Yep- Had the latest version of Java, (Version 6, Update 6) and the latest
version of Shockwave Player. Whatever the problem was that caused me to get
the message about a missing registry key must have worked itself out because
I do not get it anymore since I went to the Java site to verify that I had
the latest update etc.
