Java?

I've had Windows XP for a long time. Recently I am receiving popups saying
Java Updates are available to download and there is a Java icon in my tray.
This is the first I've heard of Java, don't know what it is nor if I need it.
However, I see in Add-Remove Programs it is listed "Java 2 Runtime
Environment SEv1.4.2-03" so guess I've had it all along and was unaware of
its existence. My question...is your advice that I get the downloads or,
alternatively, delete the Java Program. Many thanks.
(If I understood its function I could make an intelligent choice myself.)

If you are using any version of Sun Java that is prior to JRE Version 6.0,
then you are strongly urged to remove any/all versions.
There are numerous vulnerabilities in them and they are actively being exploited.

It is highly suggested that you update to the latest version which is Sun Java JRE/JSE
Version 6.0 update 4 (jre 6u4)

Simple check, look under...
C:\Program Files\Java

The only folder under that folder should be the latest version.

Such as...
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_04

Well, you'll certainly want to remove the JRE 1.4.2_03, which is
well-known for its security flaws, even if you don't need any other Jave
Runtime installed.
