Hi. If I download Java from the Sun Micro Systems site, will it overwrite
WinXP's built in Java?
And would I need to disable the built in on by unchecking the box in
Internet Express-Tools-Internet Options-Enable Java ?
Am running WinXP-HE with SP-1. When I click on 'View' in Internet Express,
it shows:

Microsoft (R) VM For JAVA, 5.0 Release 5.0.0.3810.

I'm trying to correct a 'File Not Found' JSP Error message I get at Canons
download site. Thanks anyone. Dean

As far as I can tell, the plug in for Sun Java doesn't overwrite MS VM,
in fact I have both enabled. Some sites need the Plug in where others
don't. I did try switching from one to the other but that became a
chore, ;o).
I have Broadband, so I use JIT Compiler, but play around with the
settings, see which work for you and which don't.
Good Luck.
Anne.

Hi Dean - Both Java VM's can co-exist on your machine quite nicely. Just
select
which one you want to use in Tools|Internet Options|Advanced and restart
all IE browsers. Here, courtesy of Michel Gallant, MVP Security, is a
tiny utility which allows you to toggle and view status of your current
Java VM vendor associated with IE:
http://pages.istar.ca/~neutron/SelectIEJVM

A note from Mitch Gallant:

"One note about the JVM Selector utility:
If/when you install a new version of Sun J2SE, you need to manually
select to have Sun JVM as default JVM for IE (in install), or after
install
via the JavaPlugin control panel. This generates the necessary win32
registry
entries, which must be present for the utility to know about JavaPlugin.
After that, the utility should work properly."

No

There will be a new, separate item relating to the Sun Java.

Also Sun provides a control panel applet for the Java, on its Browser
page you can check to have the Sun Java as default engine for either IE
or Netscape. And if that is off for IE, then by implication the MS
version gets used.
