JAVA errors

Everytime I try to download some applications I get Java errors. Which are
below:
*************************************
Java(TM) Web Start 1.5.0_06
---------------------------
Bad installation. Error invoking Java VM (execv)
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\javaw.exe
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
---------------------------
Yahoo! SiteBuilder Setup
---------------------------
Installation failed due to internal error. Expected the file C:\Program
Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\.sbpath to have been created during installation.
---------------------------
**********************************************************
Also, when I try to set up an online chat with AT&T Yahoo I get the following:
An unexpected error has been detected by HotSpot Virtual Machine:
#
# EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) at pc=0x6d1f7a55, pid=2816,
tid=4016
#
# Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (1.5.0_06-b05 mixed mode, sharing)
# Problematic frame:
# C 0x6d1f7a55

It seems like I am having quite a few errors when trying to download. I
would appreciate some assistance.

Thank you.

It seems likely that your Java Runtime Environment is corrupted. What I
would try would be to delete it and try again. If it was installed via a
MSI or other installer, it will be in the Program List in Add/Remove
Programs.

If it wasn't installed via an installer, you can delete it and download
it again and re-install it.

Cliff:

Just one question before I delete the Java. I will go to remove programs
and delete it and when I go to Microsoft to re-install do I just ask for Java
Runtime Environment? Any version?

Thanks

Cliff:

Sorry -- have another question. I went to look at all the Java programs on
the system and have quite a few. I did see Java Runtime and some different
versions. Also under Add/Remove programs saw Java Runtime and different
versions. There were quite a few of Java applications shown through Explore
but assume I only delete all the Java Runtime versions.

Thanks again.

I would be cautious about deleting the Java. But that said, it may be
your only way to go. There is a Microsoft Version of Java, but, since
the error message mentioned Java Web Start I assumed that you have at
some time installed JWS and/or the Sun version of Java. I would get the
latest version that you can find of (probably) the Sun version. Java 1.5
is I believe the latest version and any '06' etc that follows is a minor
version.

Hi Mary,

It's very hard for me to say from here. Can you provide a list? When you
say "Java applications shown through explore", can you please expand on
that? What "java applications" do you have installed? An example of a
Java application would be Java Web Start (JWS, which is a way of running
other Java applications in a browser) Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is
not considered a java application as such. Java Development Kit (or JDK)
or Java System Development Kit (SDK) are not applications either. Just
getting the terminology clear so that we are both talking about the same
thing. Generally, different versions of JRE or JDK/SDK are not a problem
since applications (such as JWS) are generally configured in install to
point to the correct version.

Cheers,

Cliff:

Sorry to bother you again, but I went to Add/Remove programs and here is
what I have installed:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment , SE v1.4.2_03
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06

So should I leave these alone and go to Sun or Microsoft to get Java 1.5. I
guess I am confused because you said originally it was corrupted and to
delete and get the latest version.

I really appreciate your cooperation. I just want to be able to get this
resolved.

Thanks.

Cliff:

Please do not think I am nuts!!! I searched for Java and came up with 3
Java Runtime Environment 1.5.0 applications, but when I looked at its
properties says installed but zero bytes. This was found when I searched but
funny it was not in the Add/Remove programs. Something happened when I
downloaded. I suppose I should get rid of these 3 versions since have
nothing in them.

I hope this is not confusing -- it is getting strange.

Thanks.

Mary,

Yes, you should uninstall all those older versions.

Furthermore, I recommend getting Java from the source: Sun.

http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

After downloading and installing, you may or may not need to tweak some
settings. Assuming you're running Internet Explorer, go to

Tools > Internet Options > Advanced

Make sure that the box next to Java (Sun) is checked and the box next to
Microsoft VM: Java Console enabled is unchecked.

Restart your PC and hopefully all will be well!

And now a question for the experts...

When I go to the page above, it says:

Download Java Software for your desktop computer now!
Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 6

But it looks like I have Update _7_ on my PC! What's up with that?

You have the JDK not the JRE. The Java Development Kit (includes a
compiler) not theJava RunTime Environment (does not include the compiler)

It is OK to have multiple versions of the JRE, but it is most usual to
have one of each only. Without actually looking at your system, it is
likely that all you would need would be the latest 5.0 JRE. I would
remove all the Java versions and install the latest version 5.0. There
is a risk that you have something that needs 1.4, but you should be able
to install that version too, if you need it later.

Good luck!

I'm confused, Cliff.

I still have the installer file I downloaded:

jre-1_5_0_07-windows-i586-p.exe

And when I run the Java control panel, I get the following information:

version 1.5.0
build 1.5.0_07-b03
J2SE Runtime Environment
5.0 Update 7

Seems like JRE to me. Any ideas?

Hmm, there is a JRE embedded in the JDK. Apart from that possibility,
I've no idea.

Cliff
