I am not sure about my problem. I notice that some of the website like Yahoo
games that require some java thing that i do not able to access. However, in
my memory that windows 2k was able to lunch those java games without install
any editional java software.

I emailed yahoo but they suggest either to use Netscape (netscape has build
in that java machine) or download this thing
"http://www.netvigator.com/netvigator/smn/download/msjavx86.exe". I think
this is the MS java VM that they want me to install. But I dont' want to
install if XP or IE6 already have it build in. I wonder where can i activate
it. Plz help

It's better if you use the official sun java virtual machine,
available at java.sun.com! It features all of the latest updates to
java, and it avoids you to get in trouble with one of the well known
security leaks found in microsoft's one. (but hey it may not work with
some old sites very internet-explorer oriented; however in windows xp
u can install both and choose at any time wich one to use from the
control panel). Microsoft jvm is not an official java virtual machine
licensed by sun, nor it is available as a download from microsoft's,
not is updated anymore.

Because of legal troubles, no java VM has been shipped with microsoft
windows xp, nor it was (and is) available as a download from
microsoft's. It was included just in the windows xp service pack 1
update, but after a less than a month (and more arguing in tribunal
between ms and sun) microsoft removed its jvm from the service pack,
and renamed service pack 1 as service pack 1a. So, most people owning
windows xp don't really have any java virtual machine installed.

I understand why the Sun version is preferable, but how can you get the
Microsoft VM to work? I need to access certain sites/programs that I
suspect for some reason need the Microsoft version to work - they certainly
aren't working with the latest Sun version. I know that MS doesn't have it
for download anymore, but I've found some other places to get it, including
the site mentioned earlier in this thread, but after installing it I don't
see it in the control panel or add/remove programs. I would appreciate any
help - this has been a frustrating process.

Thanks to all who have responded in this thread and my thread earlier. I
think I've finally got things working!

I installed the Java VMs on this website: http://www.virtualmachine.tk/
Builds 3805, 3809, and 3810 in order.

I got this far last night, but didn't realize I had to enable Microsoft VM
and disable Java VM in Tools/Internet Options/Advanced. Changing these
settings finally got the sites I needed working. The applets on my hospital
website now work. Strangely, so do ESPN and iVillage. It doesn't make
sense to me why this should work, but it does. I guess there really is a
difference between the Sun and Microsoft versions, and these sites must not
have been tested with the Sun version.

A couple more questions - can I have both Javas enabled at the same time?
Or will I have to pick which one I want to use in a given session? It seems
like the Sun version is ultimately the one to go with, since there will be
no updates from Microsoft. I guess I can live with changing the settings
whenever I need to access certain sites. I am also concerned about having
the Microsoft one enabled, with the potential security problems that may
exist in the future when it doesn't get updated. If it is not enabled,
there shouldn't be a security hole, right?

Thanks again to all!

You're very welcome! Glad to hear you were able to resolve your problem.
Good job!

Both Java VM's can co-exist on your machine quite nicely. Just select which
one you want to use in Tools|Internet Options|Advanced and restart all IE
browsers. Here, courtesy of Mitch Gallant, MVP Security, is a tiny utility
which allows you to toggle and view status of your current Java VM vendor
associated with IE:

Thank you for posting back and letting us know what worked for you, and for
the benefit of other readers who might have a similar problem. :)
