Java crashes Internet Explorer

G

Gary Randall

I get a grey square where the Java eal is supposed to be and then the
browser goes away.

I have tried to update Java VM... but it still crashes.

Can anybody help? I can't even sell on eBay.

M

Michael Solomon \(MS-MVP-Windows Shell/User\)

Well, if you have JVM installed, I guess the next thing to check would be
the drivers for your graphics card. Have you checked for updated drivers
for that card at the card manufacturer's web site lately?

G

Gary Randall

I updated the driver as you advised, still crashes when the Java ap starts.

My brain is smokin'...

Gary

M

Michael Solomon \(MS-MVP-Windows Shell/User\)

Have you checked other drivers that might need updating, the soundcard for
example?

Also, go to Control Panel, open Administrative Tools, open Event Viewer,
look for recurring errors that roughly correspond to the crashes, double
click the error, this may reveal information about the source of the
problem.

G

Gary Randall

This machine is new. But...

I do get a message on my desktop in note pad format whenever IE crashes.
Below is the content.

Thanks so much,

Gary

Please check event viewer as well. Since the machine is new, you might want
to check your PC's tech support.

Did you install Adobe Acrobat or did it come with your system. If you
installed it, are you sure you have the latest version, did you check the
Adobe site for later versions; www.adobe.com. Dated versions of Adobe can
cause crashes. Also, do you have Adobe Font Manager installed. There is a
reference in the text you posted to fontmanager.dll which might be an adobe
dll and that almost certainly would point to Adobe Font Manger as the
culprit or at least a possible culprit. If you do have font manager
installed, try removing it in add/remove programs in control panel and see
if you still have the issue.

Also, it appears you are using Sun's Java, do you have the latest version,
have you checked the web site for a later version.

Do not assume either with drivers or any other updates that because you have
a new machine that drivers and other applications are completely up to date.
Drivers change rapidly, updates for software are offered often. Even on a
made to order system, you have no way of knowing how long various parts,
modems, graphics cards, sound cards, etc. were in the manufacturer's
warehouse before being used in production. It is not unusual for a new
machine to need such updates.

I went through and uninsatalled all that is Adobe. Now it works.

I had Adobe Acrobat and Photo shop....

Now it works. The problem had to be with one of those.

Michael, I really appreciate your help. I wish I could buy you a beer...

Now it works. The problem had to be with one of those.

There
is
a
reference in the text you posted to fontmanager.dll which might be an adobe
dll and that almost certainly would point to Adobe Font Manger as the
culprit or at least a possible culprit.

Try taking a look at Event Viewer as I described earlier in this thread.
There may be more in there that might give us a clue.

No problem.

Look for recurring errors that appear to have occurred at approximately the
same time as when IE crashed, then double click the error and see what's
inside, possibly posting the contents here. Since the error is pretty
regular, you can probably make it happen, note the time and check for a
corresponding error in Event Log.

A few other things to consider, the Adobe removal may have left remnants
around that might be an issue. You should check their web site for any
additional removal instructions.

Also, download, install and run the following as you may have a helper app
or some spyware that might be causing this problem:

Ad Aware:
www.lavasoftusa.com

Spybot:
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,22262,00.asp
