Java not displaying

I have noticed that Java is not displaying anymore on webpages I visit.
This after installing some MS updates and the subsequent crashing.
I do have the VM installed.
What is odd is that, where normally you see a greyish screen where Java is
supposed to be running, I now see a white square.
Any help available for fixing this ?

Reinstall Java.

For the Microsoft versions:

For the Sun version:
http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html
