You can not change the language of Windows XP.
If you want Windows XP in English, you need to buy Windows XP in English.

Hi.

This will be be a bit of a problem, I imagine, as the user interface and all
instructions are presumably in Japanese. If there is an English PC available
nearby, take a look at the icons and use these to find your way around.

The first thing to do - I would suggest - is to get into Control Panel.
Start// Control Panel (on my machine on the Start Menu it is just below "My
Network Places")
In Control Panel you will want to find "Regional and Language Options" The
icon is a tiny globe on a stand. Clicking this opens a dialogue box with
three tabs. Select the left tab and you will see a scroll down window where
you will probably find Engish. How it will look, I don't know!
??
but this is what I have found. [Hope it come up okay at your end]!

Do not click on the rectangular tab next to the scroll box (In English it
says "Customize") until you have English up and running.

If you get through this, then you have to sort out all the other items,
Keyboard, dictionary etc.

Good luck,

Ed

I noticed the Japanese translation for English in my last posting does not
copy and Jupiter Jones, [MVP] is a good deal more qualfiied than I to advise
you. Looks like you may be our of luck, but I'll keep watching this space in
case you come up with something. It is always nice to know how things turn
out.

Best wishes,

Ed

I am wondering - just to install Windows on a Japanese machine will still
leave things like the BIOS in Japanese, and, presumably, any other plug-ins,
add-ons, apps etc. Do you see any point here, or would you suggest, as I
would at this point.., say thanks but no thanks to his kind Japanese friend?

The BIOS menus on East Asian computers are in English. A computer
purchased in Japan or Korea can easily be switched to English by
installing a full English copy of the operating system. You can
either replace the Japanese OS or install English alongside as a dual
boot feature.
