ITUNES Frustration

C

Chuck

I am using windows Vista Home Deluxe addition.

When I try to download Itunes it downloads the file and I get these messages
when trying to install:
First window is titled "msiexec.exe – Bad Image" and the window message says
"c:\windows\system32\sfc_os.dll is either not designed to run on windows or
it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original
installation media or contact your system administrator or the software
vendor for support."

I click ok and another window opens titled "msiexec.exe – Bad Image – Entry
Point Not Found" and the window message says "The procedure entry point
sfc_os.SfcIsFileProtected could not be located in the dynamic link library
sfc.dll"

I click ok and a new window opens and the message says "The installer has
encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a
problem with this package. The error code is 2894."

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have an Iphone and would like to
put some music on the phone. I registered using our old computer but have a
new computer (less than year old) I would like to have Itunes as my old
computer is ready to die anyday.

I'm not sure that iTunes works on Vista at the current moment. You would
have to check the iTunes web site and maybe Microsoft's web site for the
answer to that question.

I really need help with this situation!

I've installed iTunes 7.5 on two Vista laptops within the last week
and had no problems. Are you sure you selected the Windows version
when downloading?

Michael,
My msiexec file has the same properties but my sfc_os file is
different...mine is:

c:\users\Chuck\downloads\sfc_os.dll
File and Product version: 5.1.2600.2180
4.5 kb updated 12/9/2007 11:16 pm
This has been a problem for awhile...is it in the wrong folder and does it
update everytime I startup?
HELP ME!!! :0)

Chuck,
First check to see that you have c:\Windows\System32\sfc_os.dll.
If it is gone than you may have had a virus/spyware substitute its own in
downloads!
Try (at an elevated command prompt)

sfc /scannow

Note that this may not work if the only sfc_os.dll that is on the system is
the bad one at downloads.
This will take awhile but pay attention if it says it needs to fix anything
especially sfc_os.dll !

Version x.x.2600.x is, I think for Windows XP SP1 and is often hacked to
enable changes to the XP system bypassing the system integrity checks. Used
by hackers or people that simply wanted to change system programs that
Microsoft thought should not be changed.

Any program installation that is downloading that file should be treated as
a trojan or worse.
Check the date/times for other files in the downloads to see if there is a
match, any that match should also be checked very carefully. In any case
2600 version does not belong on a Vista machine. Rename it to sfc_oc.dll.bad
or something and try again.

Chuck,
What happens when you try? What error message do you receive?
If it says file is busy we have a problem, perhaps starting up in the F8
mode might work.
If it says something like access denied or you do not have permission then
you will need to take ownership of the file and then give yourself
permission to change the file.
You can check ownership and permissions by right click on the file, select
security tab, advanced button, then Owner tab. DO NOT change anything for
the C:\Windows\System32\sfc_os.dll, make sure you are changing the one in
downloads!

Mike,
My sfc_os.dll file has no file version, has no product name, has no product
version and has no copyright date.
It's size says 37.5 KB date modified 11/2/2006 1:46 AM....is this a problem?

Michael Walraven

Chuck,
If you right click on the sfc_os.dll, select properties, and do not get a
dialogue with three tabs, General - Security - Details, you have a bigger
problem than I can help with.
The file version is in the details tab.

My sfc_os.dll (in c:\windows\system 32) is 37.5 KB date modified Thursday
November 02, 2006, 4:46:13 AM
The time difference could be due to relative time zones between out machines
(I am in eastern time zone).

OK, thats what mine says....it does show the three tabs. I cannot install ANY
programs right now with this issue...frustrating to say the least.
Chuck (Thank you for taking the time with this issue)

Most of us are used to installing an application update over an existing
version of the program. However, for many programs in Vista, the old program
must be completely uninstalled before the update or new program can be
successfully installed. Download and installation of programs or updates
sometimes fails, leaving broken install debris. Normal uninstall processes
on Vista are generally inadequate, often leaving program remnant files and
orphaned registry entries on your system. Buildup of this install/uninstall
debris can block normal program installation, impair proper program
functioning, generate any number of error messages, and degrade Vista
performance.

Complete removal of broken installs and incomplete uninstalls is essential
for normal install processes to occur. You can do this retroactively, after
debris buildup has accumulated to the point of major computer malfunction,
using a good registry scanner/cleaner. It is preferred to do this
proactively, cleaning file remnants and registry entries after each
uninstall, preventing debris buildup. Proactively, you can remove this
install/uninstall debris manually with help from Windows Install CleanUp
Utility or you can use Smarty Uninstaller.

The best way to remove all the remnants of a partially uninstalled program
or a broken install is to use Smarty Uninstaller. This program will scan
your system and list all the programs on your computer, including "broken"
parts of programs. It will then run the program's uninstaller (if present),
and then rescan to list any pieces left on your system. Clicking Cleanup
will then remove all traces of your program and installation of the new or
update program can then proceed normally.

A link to Smarty Uninstaller and other information about install/uninstall
problems can be found at the following tutorial. For information on removing
an empty listing from your Programs and Features, see the second tutorial.
The third and fourth links are to good registry scanner/cleaner programs. If
the preceding doesn’t solve your problem, see the fifth link about your
Repair Vista Options.

You may also have a Vista security issue. You may need to take Ownership
and grant yourself Full Control permissions to modify many folders or files.

Take Ownership/Permissions
Even running as Administrator may leave you without permissions to modify
some files or folders, even ones that you have downloaded and installed. To
access or modify (copy, delete, rename) files or folders you can take
Ownership of (in your Username) and grant yourself Full Control permissions
of the files or folders in question described in the following tutorial.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67717-take-ownership-file.html

To avoid having to do this individually for hundreds of files, Take
Ownership of large branch folders like Program Files folder, Users folder, or
Windows folder, and grant yourself Full Control of the folder, all
subfolders, and all files contained in the folder. In the case of Program
Files, you would have full access to all your programs. In the case of Users
folder, you would have full access to your Music, Pictures, Videos,
Documents, etc. In the case of Windows folder you would have full access to
your OS, including Windows Installer. These folders are all major branches of
your C:\ drive that can be accessed by clicking on Computer->C:\. My C drive
is listed as OS(C:).

Windows Explorer Run As Administrator
Another way to gain access to modify files and folders includes going to the
Start button, typing in Windows Explorer, right-clicking on this and
selecting Run As Administrator. You should then have "elevated privileges"
to do whatever you wish to files in Windows Explorer.

Unlocker Program
There is also a program called Unlocker that you can use to gain access to
modify files and folders.
