Hey, I'm the one that's been thinking about re-formatting....you've all
been such a great help with that and I have decided to do the
re-formatting.

My question is....I know that I'm going to lose everything on my hard
drive or whatever when I do this. Am I going to lose all the passwords
and settings I have at other sites? Will I have to go to every site
I've ever been to and sign up for membership with totally different
user names and passwords (because I've already used those names)?

Thanks,
Jamie

You'll loose them but you can use the same username and password. You
probably don't remember them all, so get

As someone who contributed to your original thread, I should like to say I am
relieved that you are reformatting. I find that it is necessary (for me at
least) to reformat my computers about once every 6 to 9 months. If you load
your machine with a large amount of data and applications, and sundry
downloads, eventually something will not wish to work alongside something
else. Or there will be some virus, or spyare, which just will not get deleted
whatever you are advised to the contrary. Then everything just slows down.

So you know about backing up your data. It is worthwhile to purchase an
external harddrive to do the backing up if you have a great deal of data.
Otherwise, CDs or DVDs provide a good method for backing up.

Make full lists of all programs and downloads. You can of course use the
external drive to hold your downloads folder if you have one. If you have a
large number of icons on your desktop, an easy way to remember what you have
is to press the Prt Sc (print screen) key on your keyboard. Then, using
Photoshop or a similar program, open a new window, select Paste, and a
picture of what is on your desktop will appear. You can then print that off
on any printer.

Good luck.

Well right now I can't even get my computer to recognize my Flash Drive
so I may just have to go totally bare!

As far as programs/passwords/memberships, I've written every password
and user-name down on paper. I am actually looking forward to starting
all over. As silly as that may sound to some, I love computers and the
more I learn, the better. So even if I lose every single thing I had,
it's not the end of the world is it? lol

Anyway, I will definitely be purchasing an external harddrive as soon
as possible. Can you tell me the least expensive place to get one? I
mean, I don't want it to be junk but I'm not rich either.

Thanks a million,
Jamie

You should also consider imaging the hard drive so that if you are like
Tonyo UK who likes formatting his HD every 6 to 9 months then it is very
easy to reset the machine from HD images rather than installing from OS
CDs. This is my experience from restoring students' machines when they
have downloaded lots of spywares and viruses which they have no clue
what to do!! For us restoring everything from images is the easiest
method as we don't have the time to manually scan each systems for
viruses and spywares!!

How do I take the images?
