Got Vista Public Beta2 coming on DVD, so I'm starting the big
search for drivers:

mobo Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9
Gigabyte tech support pointed me to nvidia.com for
all mobo drivers .. sound, lan, chipset

BFG GF7900GTO
Again, BFP pointed me to nVidia Vista driver

PowerColor TV-Tuner T55E-P03
Tech support sounded angry. Called ATI and held phone
about 10 minutes. Will try again. There is a Win64 driver
at Powercolor.com ??? Read that ATI might not support
their own chipset ???

Sounds like the "good guys" are ready to go with Vista.

Hate to burst your bubble, but you wasted the six bucks. Build 5384 (what
they are shipping you) simply doesn't work. You log in, it loads your
personal settings, and logs you out again. How helpful. :) -Dave

What the heck do they think they are doing? Vista driver downloads
are going up on all the hardware sites. I even got the right ATI driver
for the T55E. What freaking good is a Beta if you can't test it ??
Why don't they log us out in 6 months when the final product comes
out ?

Called them. They said you must be having an install problem.
The Beta DVD is fully functional. Only issues so far are drivers,
but that is to be expected.

There's more issues than drivers, believe me. I had it on my PC for 12 hours
(dual boot with XP) before I got rid and put XP64 back, which apart from the
odd driver problem, works fine for me.

Nope. Install went perfectly. I'm not the only one who has experienced it
either. The user groups are full of complaints. Basically, it will install
perfectly, but won't let you log on. Well, you can log on, but then you are
automatically logged out. -Dave

Well, no matter how ****ed up the BETA is, I would expect it to at least let
me log in to do, ummmmm . . . something. :) -Dave

actually you would 'expect' the final to be somethng, you will hope and
pray a beta does anything worthwhile.........

Well then our hopes were dashed. I just feel sorry for the schmucks who
forked out the six bucks to have the dvd delivered, knowing that it's busted
even before it leaves Microsoft. -Dave

One group says it is a "security" setting in the admin
setup. If you tried something it didn't like, it will toss
you. Most of the sites are "trying" all sorts of junk
and seem to be OK. When my $6 DVD gets here,
I'm the kind of guy who won't take no for an answer.
I have a paid admin contract, and they are going to
get the full benefit of it. This thing had better work,
or I'll blackball them regards future purchasing. Big
deal, but they are going to spend a lot of time
trying to convince the vendors to bundle what I , and
others, refuse to buy. Microsoft seems determined
to keep its bad reputation. Next rep fool enough to
come here for a seminar, is going to have a lot of
explaining to do, and I'll drag him back to their
stupid incompatible Microsoft DNS protocol that
won't route on a Unix lan. And then I'll get in his
face about this thing ... and I won't back down.
Microsoft won't put another rep out their door that
we aren't laying for him. Like I said .. it's going to
be fun.

You mean like logging in with a valid user name and valid password? Shit,
they are really SERIOUS about security, finally. :) -Dave

Servers finally cleared, and I got down the ISO file. Burned it with
Nero, and it installed OK .. so far. I'll keep that $6 dvd in reserve,
or test it on another box later. Trick now is to do the inf thing
with the Vista drivers from nvidia.com, and the 550 driver from
ATI.com. First hassle install was F-secure .. did not like Vista
at all. Microsoft site points to a freebie anti-virus ... EZ. The
nvidia SATA floppy worked fine. I'm a bit chicken to load the
nvidia 7900 driver, but I will tomorrow, and then start loading
games. That is what I really want to see ... esp Far Cry and
CoD2. I also have the 64 bit Far Cry. That one is sure to crash,
but what the heck.

The $6 (plus tax plus shipping and handling) did not go to waste. You
will receive RC1 in the mail when it comes out.

Well I tried it but I never could get the ATI 64bit drivers installed.
So I reformatted the HD and I'm using the drive elsewhere. Not worth the
hassle right now.

The 64-bit version ISO-file is ~4.1 GB and the 32-bit version ISO-file is
~3.1GB

I think if we document what we are doing, we might solve a lot
of the hassles. ATI drivers are a stinker at best .. even on a 32
bit system. I have like a degree in hacking my 9800 driver, but
it works.
