Install Hangs for x64 Windows Server 2008 and Vista SP1 on ICH9R R

I'm trying to install Windows Server 2008 x64 on my new computer system, but
the installation hangs early-on when booting from the DVD. Since Vista x64
SP1 has a similar "code base", I tried that too and it also hung at the same
spot. By "hung", I mean that it is stuck on the second black screen with the
small green left-to-right forever repeating progress bar (following the
"Windows is loading file..." screen).

The hang occurs early in the boot process from DVD, before the user has a
chance to respond to any prompt. If attempted via SETUP.EXE, user can use
the Load Driver option, but I've had no luck with this either.

This system is configured with ICH9R RAID10 using four 500 GB HDD, and a
fifth 500 GB drive on a separate SATA controller (JMicron). I already have
successfully installed: Windows XP x86 SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2 x86 SP2,
Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 SP2, and Windows Vista Business x64 RTM. All x64
editions see all the 8GB RAM that I have available.

Things that I've tried:
[1] using only 2GB RAM
[2] by running SETUP.EXE from with Win2003 x64
[3] like [2] but with custom Load Driver option, using Intel's latest
8.2.0.1001 iaStor.sys driver
[4] install to partition on RAID
[5] install to partition on standalone drive
[6] by upgrading Vista x64 RTM to SP1 (completes all phases, then hangs on
final reboot)

Intel has a warning on their website at
http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imsm/sb/cs-025783.htm. It sounds like
they have identified a problem with the RAID driver and bad Registry entries.

What more can I do? Is Microsoft aware of this problem?

This is a follow-up to the issue...

UPDATE: I came a lot closer to the real problem yesterday. If I disconnect
the one SATA HDD that I have on the JMicron controller (JMB36X), the boot for
Win2008 and Vista SP1 will both proceed.

I don't know if it takes both ICH9R RAID and JMicron SATA HDD to create this
problem, but a "problem" it certainly is. At this point, I have a
workaround, but it certainly is not satisfactory--I want to use HDD's on the
other controller too!

Situations I've tried:

with JMicron (Native IDE or AHCI+IDE) SATA HDD attached when booting from
DVD*: HANGS
with JMicron (Native IDE or AHCI+IDE) SATA HDD attached after O/S* is
installed: HANGS on boot
with JMicron (Native IDE or AHCI+IDE, default drivers) SATA HDD attached
after O/S* is up: IGNORED
with JMicron (AHCI+IDE, Jraid.sys driver installed) attached after O/S* is
up: will connect successfully
with JMicron disabled: Install works, O/S* boot also works
with JMicron and IDE Optical only (Native IDE or AHCI+IDE): Install works,
O/S* boot also works

*the operating system is either Windows Vista x64 with SP1 bundled in, or
Windows Server 2008--their behavior in this regard is identical.

Problem identified with both the "Native IDE" and "AHCI+IDE" modes of the
JMicron (JMB36X) onboard controller. Issue went away when I:

1. Removed all SATA HDDs from the JMicron
2. Disable the JMicron controller at the BIOS level
3. Use the "RAID+IDE" mode of the JMicron.

This last solution worked well for me. All 5 O/S'es can now use the 1TB
RAID on the ICH9R, and one or both HDDs on the JMicron (I'm currently running
the latter in non-RAID configuration). Apparently, the default SATA IDE
driver of Vista x64 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 cannot handle the JMicron;
and even JMicron's own Jraid.sys driver has issues when running "AHCI+IDE"
mode. Under the "RAID+IDE", I get NCQ and hot swap features, even when the
drives are not actually runing in a RAIDset.

I don't know if you are still struggling with this but you could try slipstreaming the install.

I had a similar problem installing XP without SP2. My specific problem was related to PCI Express drivers. I used nLite to create an install CD with XP SP1 + SP2 & SP3 along with the new nVidia drivers. It worked on the first try.

At the moment I am trying to work out how to install Win2008 on a test box that isn't Enterprise class hardware. I am running up against the same problem in lack of SATA support, but nLite doesn't like the install disc for Win2008 because there isn't a 386 folder.

I found an article on using x86_PE to assist with Vista and WIN2008 installs. The topic was 'Automated Installtion Kit for Windows Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008' You might research that if nLite doesn't work for you.
